Youngstown YMCA Health Fair Set for Wednesday
Friday, October 19, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- More than 70 booths will be set up Wednesday at the Central YMCA for its annual health fair. The fair promotes healthful lifestyles, offers free screenings, administers flu shots and offers blood work.
The fair is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., said fitness director Maureen Horvath.
This year's event, sponsored by WellCare Health Plans, offers a variety of services from American Red Cross, Akron Children’s Hospital, Humility of Mary Health Partners, Belmont Pines Hospital, Help Hotline Crisis Center, Mammovan, Alzheimer’s Network, among others.
PNC Nets $925M in Third Quarter
Friday, October 19, 2012PITTSBURGH -- The PNC Financial Services Group Inc. reports net income of $925 million, or $1.64 per diluted common share, for the third quarter of 2012. This compares with $546 million, or 98 cents per diluted common share, for the previous quarter.
Net income for the third quarter of 2011 was $834 million, or $1.55 per diluted common share.
For the first nine months of this year, the company earned net income of $2.3 billion, or $4.06 per diluted common share, compared with $2.6 billion, or $4.79 per diluted common share, for the first nine months of 2011.

Housing Starts Post Big Gains in September
Friday, October 19, 2012WASHINGTON -- Nationwide production and permitting of new houses rose sharply in September, reaching their highest levels in more than four years. And, sparked by rising home prices across much of the nation, the housing recovery seems to be under way.
A 15% gain brought the pace of new housing construction to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000 units, while an 11.6% gain brought the pace of permit issuance to 894,000 units. These were the strongest numbers seen in both categories since July 2008, according to a report from the National Association of Home Builders.

Council Authorizes City to Pursue Drilling for Gas
Thursday, October 18, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – City Council voted 5-2 Wednesday night to authorize the Board of Control to seek competitive proposals and enter into contracts that would lease land the city owns to oil and gas companies.
4th Ward Councilman Mike Ray and 5th Ward Councilman Paul Drennen voted no to the proposal upon its third reading.
Mill Creek Park Sets Second Hearing on Drilling
Thursday, October 18, 2012CANFIELD, Ohio – The Board of Mill Creek MetroParks has scheduled a second public hearing for Oct. 25 related to oil and gas exploration and its potential impact.
The first public hearing was held Oct. 16 and featured Rhonda Reda, executive director for the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Project.
Reda defended the industry's practices and touted the economic benefits of oil and gas drilling in the Utica shale.
The second hour was reserved for public comment, and all who spoke voiced their opposition to drilling on or near the park.
Mahoning Valley Home Sales Down in September
Thursday, October 18, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of homes sold in the area during September dropped sharply from August, but kept pace with a year ago, reports the Mahoning-Columbiana Association of Realtors.
September home sales totaled 174 in Mahoning County, down from 215 in August, while Trumbull County sales fell from 168 in August to 133 last month, according to monthly statistics released Wednesday. Columbiana County’s September sales of 66 houses was off from 83 in August.
New Owners of Steel Mill Report 'Progress'
Thursday, October 18, 2012WARREN, Ohio – The new owners of the former RG Steel plant say they're making progress toward assessing whether the Pine Avenue mill could be restarted and sold, and reported several parties taking interest in the plant are continuing their due diligence.
A press release issued by BDM Warren Steel Holdings LLC said that the company has been in contact with some parties interested in operating portions, or all, of the mill, but "no definitive offers to operate have been made."
