Wellsville Intermodal Facility Bustles with Barges
Thursday, August 01, 2013WELLSVILLE, Ohio -- Larry Heck says he’s accustomed to handling the cargo of five to six barges a month pushed up the Ohio River to the Columbiana County Port Authority’s Wellsville Intermodal Facility where he runs his business.
Over the past several months, that number has climbed to 12 to 14 barges per month, reports Heck, president of Pier 48 Stevedoring LLC, a transloading company that handles all marine operations at the Wellsville site. “Between now and September, I have 28 barges headed my way,” he says.
High School for Autism Set to Open in September
Thursday, August 01, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Among the greatest concerns of parents with children diagnosed with autism is the lack of academic and educational options after their children complete elementary and junior high school.
That void soon will be filled in the Mahoning Valley as officials Wednesday presented plans to convert the former Anthem building, 2405 Market St., into the Potential Development High School for Autism, a high school dedicated specifically to teens with autism.
22nd Well Permit Awarded for Hanover Township
Thursday, August 01, 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has issued a new horizontal well permit to Chesapeake Exploration LLC in Columbiana County, agency records show.
It is the 81st well permitted in county and the 22nd permit issued for Hanover Township, according to the ODNR. The permit was issued July 23 to Chesapeake for a future well at the Frank Zehentbauer farm.
ODNR issued seven new horizontal well permits for oil and gas exploration in the Utica shale last week, the agency reported.
Centofanti Foundation Gives YMCA's Camp Fitch $300K
Thursday, August 01, 2013BOARDMAN, Ohio -- A $300,000 gift from the James & Coralie Centofanti Charitable Foundation will enable the Youngstown YMCA to build an equestrian center at its Camp Fitch in North Springfield, Pa., and open the facility next summer when the camp celebrates 100 years of operations.
“It’s huge,” Brian Rupe, executive director of Camp Fitch, says of the gift, presented Tuesday at the offices of Farmers Trust Co., which administers the Centofanti fund’s $8 million in assets.
YNDC Gets $297K Grant for Food Projects
Thursday, August 01, 2013OUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. has been awarded a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant of $296,816, the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, announced Wednesday.
The three-year grant, part of the Community Food Projects of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, will be spent on teaching “food entrepreneurship in Youngstown,” Ryan’s office said. “The goals of the Community Food Projects are to help meet the food needs of low-income people and increase self-reliance of communities in providing for their food needs.
