Eastern Gateway, Hiram Get Dominion Foundation Grants
Thursday, August 15, 2013AKRON, Ohio -- Eastern Gateway Community College and Hiram College are among 12 Ohio institutions to get a share of $220,000 in Dominion Foundation Higher Education grants, Jeff Murphy announced Wednesday.
Murphy is managing director of commercial operations at Dominion Resources. The grants focus on programs intended to help prepare students for technical positions in Ohio's growing energy production and other industries.
Industrial Piping Specialists to Unveil Castlo Operation
Wednesday, August 14, 2013STRUTHERS, Ohio -- Industrial Piping Specialists plans to unveil its new Mahoning Valley facility in the Castlo Industrial Park at a press event tomorrow.
The company, based in Tulsa, Okla., warehouses and distributes carbon and stainless pipe, fittings and flanges. It operates 11 warehouse facilities in the United States, mostly in Texas and Oklahoma, as well as two sales offices, one of them in the Pittsburgh area.
IPS services the oil and gas industry as well as the general construction industry.
Butler Institute to Dedicate Skywalk, New Galleries
Wednesday, August 14, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Dedication of the recently renovated third floor of the Butler North Education Center and newly constructed glass skywalk bridge and elevator tower that connect it with the Butler Institute of American Art is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 12. It will be open to the public Sept. 13 during the museum’s regular hours.
The center is in the former First Christian Church.
Organizers Expect 8,000 to Participate in Panerathon

The annual event, which raises funds for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Youngstown, begins at 10 a.m. Aug. 25 at the Covelli Center. What event organizers bill as “the Greatest Week in the Valley” will kick off with a concert this Friday night featuring Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.

Allstate Recognizes Zeidenstein for Volunteer Work
Wednesday, August 14, 2013CANFIELD, Ohio -- Mark Zeidenstein, an insurance agent at the L. Calvin Jones Agency, has been recognized with the Allstate Foundation’s Agency Hands in the Community award that carries a grant of $1,000 to the cause the volunteer works in behalf of.
Zeidenstein, who’s served on the board of the Northern Ohio chapter of the National Safety Council since the early 1990s, assigned the grant to the chapter.
New Construction to Reach $506 Billion, Up 6%
Wednesday, August 14, 2013NEW YORK -- The forecast of a 6% increase this year to $506 billion for new construction starts predicted last October seems to be on track, Robert A. Murray reports. Murray is vice president of economic affairs for McGraw Hill Construction, which just released its midyear update to the 2013 Construction Outlook.
The 6% rise is the same rate of increase for total construction starts predicted last October and follows the 8% gain recorded in 2012.
OSHA Fines Republic Steel Canton Mill $1.1 Million
Tuesday, August 13, 2013CANTON, Ohio -- Republic Steel has been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration for 24 safety violations carrying fines of $1,138,500. Fifteen "willful" violations of OSHA’s fall protection standards were found at the company’s Canton steel manufacturing plant, according to the agency.
