Gerberry Proposes Prohibiting Private Pay to Governor
Wednesday, August 21, 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Statewide elected officials would be largely prohibited from receiving private-sector compensation while serving in office under a proposal unveiled Tuesday by state Reps. Ron Gerberry and Nicholas Celebreeze.
The proposal follows recent reports that Gov. John Kasich received deferred compensation checks for unknown amounts from Worthington Industries, a company that received more than $600,000 in tax credits from the Kasich administration. Kasich also recieved some $103, 000 in compensation for his 2011 role on the company’s board.
Poll Suggests Trouble for Kasich, GOP in 2014
Wednesday, August 21, 2013RALEIGH, N.C. -- A new poll from Public Policy Polling suggests a tough reelection fight for Gov. John Kasich and challenges for other GOP statewide officials looking to retain their current positions next year as well.
Asked to choose between the Republican incumbent governor and Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, who is seeking the Demoncratic nomination for governor, 38% said they supported FitzGerald, 35% preferred Kasich and 27% were undecided.
July Unemployment Up in Warren, Youngstown
Tuesday, August 20, 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The city of Warren’s unemployment rate in July was up a full percentage point from the month before, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported. According to data released this morning, Warren’s unemployment rate was 10% last month, up from 9% in June. In July 2012, the unemployment rate for the city was 11.2%.
Youngstown’s rate was also higher last month, by slightly less than half of a full point. The city’s unemployment rate in July was 11%, up from 10.6% the month before though down from July 2012’s 11.4%.

Youngstown Toastmaster Writes Chapter in National Book
Tuesday, August 20, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Dena DeLuco, president of Youngstown Executive 408 Toastmasters, has written a chapter in the book Heart of a Toastmaster. The book is by, for and about Toastmaster Club members.
Sheryl Roush, a Toastmaster and editor of the book, promoted the call for submission early this summer through social media, email, newsletters, blog posts, word of mouth and speaking engagements. Her efforts resulted in 210 submissions from Toastmasters around the world. DeLuco is one of 135 whose submissions made it into the book.
Table Games Revenue in Pa. Rises 6.1% in July
Tuesday, August 20, 2013HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Revenues in July from table games such as poker and blackjack played in the 12 casinos in Pennsylvania was $59.9 million, the state Gaming Control Board reports. That represents a 6.1% increase in revenues over July 2012.
Coupled with figures on revenues from slot machines released earlier this month by the Gaming Control Board, overall gross revenue from both slots and table games was $264,860,050 compared to $269,354,774 in July 2012, or a decrease of 1.7%.
