Study Calculates Cost of Mountaintop Coal Removal
Thursday, September 12, 2013KENT, Ohio -- To meet current U.S. coal demand through surface mining, an area of the Central Appalachians the size of Washington, D.C., would need to be mined every 81 days. That’s about 68 square miles -- or roughly an area equal to 10 city blocks mined every hour.
So reports a new study by scientists at Kent State University, Duke University and the Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies.

Commerce Department Nomination Advances Williams' Political Ascent
Wednesday, September 11, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Jay Williams’ nomination Tuesday to head the Economic Development Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce advances a rapid political ascent that began less than eight years ago with his election as the city’s first black mayor.
Reached by phone Tuesday evening, Williams told The Business Journal he could not comment on his nomination, announced earlier in the day, to serve as assistant commerce secretary. If confirmed by the Senate, Williams' title would be assistant secretary for economic development in the Commerce Department.
Cruze Sales Dominate Local Market in August
Wednesday, September 11, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Chevrolet Cruze remains the best-selling vehicle in the Mahoning Valley as dealerships reported stronger sales during August.
According to the monthly report of the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio, dealers said sales of new vehicles were up 11% compared to the same period last year, with new Cruze sales up 75%.
Dealers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties reported they sold 175 new Cruzes compared to 101 last year. Collectively, 2,592 new cars and trucks rolled out of showrooms versus 2,333 in August 2012.
Chamber Cancels Friday Sessions Set for Y.O.U.N.G. Expo

McCracken Wears Two Hats, Strives for Same Goal
