Shell Chemical Selects Beaver County, Pa. for Cracker Plant

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Shell Chemical LP, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, announced today that it has signed a land option agreement to evaluate a site near Monaca, Pa., for construction of its $3.2 billion petrochemical plant. The site straddles Potter and Center Townships in Beaver County, Pa., and lies on the banks of the Ohio River. The chemical complex would manufacture plastic from the natural gases extracted from well sites in the Marcellus shale play.
In a statement released to news organizations, Shell emphasized the project remains in its earliest phases.
Auction of Residential Lots in Canfield Heartens Bidders

CANFIELD, Ohio – The auction Wednesday of nine lots in the Westbury Park development might be a harbinger of a recovering residential real estate market in the Mahoning Valley.
The man who conducted the auction at Timber Run and Grayson drives, Chris Roman, declared it ”successful,” as well he might. Roman is an auctioneer-Realtor with Roman Realty Ltd., Canfield.
Oh-Penn Workforce Summit Welcomes Educators

LISBON, Ohio -- Educators from Ohio and Pennsylvania can earn continuing education credits for their participation in the Oh-Penn Manufacturing Workforce Summit. The event is scheduled for April 12 at Youngstown State University.
The summit is designed to bring together all sectors of the community around the issue of career paths that will ensure a well-educated and trained workforce with the capacity to meet the growing needs of the region’s businesses. To encourage participation by educators, the summit has qualified to provide continuing education credits to attendees.
New Jobless Numbers Paint Mixed Portrait

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Recent employment numbers offered a decidedly mixed jobs picture. Nationally, the unemployment rate in February remained at 8.3% for the second month in a row, although the economy added 227,000 jobs during the month, the U.S. Labor Department announced Friday.
Growth sectors for the month included professional and business services (up 82,000), health care and social assistance (61,000), leisure and hospitality (44,000) and manufacturing (31,000).
‘Low Taxes, Less Government’ Foster Economic Growth

HERMITAGE, Pa. – The secretary of community and economic development, C. Alan Walker, is encouraged by the reindustrialization of Pennsylvania, he told Penn-Northwest Development Corp. Thursday, and urged the commonwealth to pursue the Republican strategy for faster economic growth, lower taxes and less bureaucracy.
He also urged his audience of Mercer County business leaders and businessmen – “opinion leaders,” he called them -- to get the message out, “Low taxes and less government spur job creation.”
