Air Base Cuts Strengthen Case for Bed Tax Increase, Port Authority Says

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Western Reserve Port Authority continues to press its case for a proposed 2% increase in Mahoning County's bed tax, arguing in a news release issued this afternoon that recently announced cuts at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station make funding Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport an even greater priority.
The port authority's chairman, Scott Lynn, also said that not approving an increase could place the air base's future in jeopardy.

Ohio Wins Site Selection's 2011 Governor's Cup Award

ATLANTA -- Ohio has won the 2011 Site Selection Governor's Cup, an award that Site Selection magazine has made annually since 1978 to the state with the most new and expanded corporate facilities.
The Buckeye State's 498-project finish for 2011 is up substantially from its 376 projects logged in 2010, which put Ohio behind Texas in the 2010 contest. Texas finished second this time around with 464 projects, followed by Pennsylvania (453), North Carolina (310) and Virginia (273).
Commissioners Balk at Increasing Hotel Bed Tax

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mahoning County commissioners Wednesday approved a three-year contract with the Western Reserve Port Authority that would have it provide economic development services, then tabled voting on the tax that would fund delivery of those services.
Ohio's 2011 Jobless Rate Drops 1.4% from 2010

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ohio's unemployment rate declined by 1.4 percentage points from 2010 to 2011, the second-highest decrease among all of the United States, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Wednesday.
Ohio, which saw its average annual jobless rate decrease from 10.0% to 8.6% over the year, was among the 48 states that saw their average jobless rates year-over-year fall from 2010 to 2011.
