Local Banks Support City's New Foreclosure Law
Wednesday, March 27, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A new municipal ordinance that holds banks accountable for the properties on which they file foreclosures is directed more at out-of-town lenders than local banks, supporters of the measure say.
"They're on board," said Gary Davenport, an organizing fellow for the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative, of the local banking community. "They want to know how they can be good partners in this."
Davenport, city residents and officeholders were on hand Tuesday to announce that the law, passed in January by City Council, would take effect and be enforced.
Unemployment Rates Show Improvement in February
Wednesday, March 27, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Unemployment rates in the Mahoning Valley region dropped by a full point or more in February from the month before, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday.
In Youngstown, February's 9.5% unemployment rate reflected a decrease of more than 1.5 percentage points from January's 11.3%, and was down from 10.6% in February 2012. Warren's unemployment rate last month was 8.8%, down more than a full percentage point from 10% in January and down from 9.1% in February 2012.

Strimbu Memorial BBQ Set for May 8
Wednesday, March 27, 2013BROOKFIELD, Ohio -- The 24th Annual Strimbu BBQ is set for 5 p.m. May 8 at the Yankee Lake Ballroom. The event is one aspect of fundraising efforts for the Strimbu Memorial Fund.
Since its inception in 1990, the Strimbu Memorial Fund has provided millions of dollars in donations and scholarships, said Paul O'Brien, president of the board. The fund also supports local economic development and many charitable organizations. Fully 99% of the proceeds of the Strimbu BBQ go to these scholarships and grants.
