YSU Lectures on Energy, Environment Start Wednesday
Tuesday, September 09, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University is hosting a speaker series on energy and the environment, organized by Ray Beiersdorfer, professor of geological and environmental sciences. The free lectures deal with the scientific, public health and policy research surrounding shale gas development and renewable energy.
Most of the lectures will be delivered via video conferencing, but three of the lectures will be delivered live. All begin at 7 p.m. successive Wednesdays in room 2000 of Moser Hall.
YSU Prof Gets $200,640 for Materials Research
Monday, September 08, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ruigang Wang, professor of materials chemistry at Youngstown State University, has been awarded $200,640 from the National Science Foundation to continue his research into improving catalytic conversion systems in automobiles.
The three-year grant is funded by the chemical catalysis program at the National Science Foundationand will support six graduate research assistant students and at least six undergraduate student researchers, the university said.
Oh-Penn Program Puts Educators Inside Factories
Monday, September 08, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Before this summer, Tawny Tharp had never set foot in a manufacturing plant.
Why would she? As a teacher at South Range Elementary School, her day is devoted to developing lesson plans, creating new learning strategies, and working to lift her third graders to higher proficiencies in subjects such as math, reading and science. Welding torches aren’t part of her curricula.
This summer though, Tharp found herself on the factory floor, dressed in coveralls and a welding torch in her hand, as she explored the fundamentals of a career in manufacturing.
FirstEnergy Education Grant Applications Due Sept. 19

Turning Forms Partnership with Pearson
Friday, September 05, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Turning Technologies announced Thursday that it plans to work with Pearson, a multi-platform educational services company based in London, and use that company's Schoolnet assessment platform in conjunction with Turning's Insight360 software in K-12 classrooms.
Through Schoolnet, Turning software will be able to deliver educational management tools that include assessments, performance data, benchmarks, and standards-based curricula.
