Cooperation Accelerates to Launch STEM Programs
Friday, September 26, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Cooperative efforts between school districts in the region and private partners are key to accelerating students’ aptitude in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education, officials say.
In the past, public school districts have struggled when on their own to obtain funding for programs that come with a high price tag. STEM education, for example, requires hands-on training with sophisticated equipment that could prove cost-prohibitive to most of these districts.
YSU Williamson College Hosts Its First Job Fair
Thursday, September 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State hosted its first stand-alone job fair Wednesday, drawing 29 employers from accounting, finance, marketing and management.
Some employers came from as far as Cleveland and Columbus to talk to YSU students.
Chaney STEM School Prepares Students to Pursue Careers
Thursday, September 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Walker has an idea. The senior at Chaney STEM and VPA Campus in Youngstown, formerly Chaney High School, would one day like to put his science and math skills to work and design a cell phone with sleek, new features.
“I want to be an engineer,” says Walker, one of 13 seniors enrolled in the school’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, engineering program. “I came here last year as a junior and so far, it’s been really good.”
YSU Launches Senior-Youth Mentorship Program
Wednesday, September 24, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- When he was 35, Joseph Lyons wanted to volunteer his time and join a mentoring program. But the director of the College of Health and Human Services graduate program at Youngstown State University didn’t have the time, he said.
Work and his two children took precedence after working and spending time with his two children.
Now 67, he has the time, along with a new perspective that can come only from a lifetime of learning. The extra three decades of experience he gained drove Lyons to establish the YSU Senior-Youth Mentorship Program.
Eastern Gateway College Reaches Enrollment Record
Wednesday, September 24, 2014STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Eastern Gateway Community College reported Tuesday that its fall enrollment is 3,155, a record.
Headcount is up 9% from fall 2013 when Eastern Gateway enrolled 2,904 students. The new-student count is 1,242, up from 1,197 a year ago. Continuing and returning students show the largest increase, going from 1,707 in 2014 to 1,913 this fall.
Another milestone in enrollment reporting was made with the unduplicated headcount for the 2013-2104 academic year when 4,338 unduplicated students registered. This is the first time enrollment broke the 4,000 mark.
