MVMC, Chamber Call for Drug-Testing Students
Wednesday, September 17, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber today called for drug-testing of students in industry-related training programs.
Letters jointly signed by Brian P. Benyo, president of the manufacturers coalition, and Thomas M. Humphries, CEO of the Regional Chamber, were sent to school superintendents in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
7 Days of STEM Begins with a Bang at Chaney
Tuesday, September 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A weeklong effort intended to encourage young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, kicked off with a bang Monday afternoon – several bangs, really -- replete with exploding watermelons, pingpong guns and other demonstrations that wowed the students.
"Who wants to see some things explode?" asked Katie Seminara of more than 250 students in the sixth through 12th grades at the Chaney STEM/VPA Campus. They answered with enthusiastic cheers.
Academy of Science Develops STEM 'Roadmap'
Monday, September 15, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Academy of Science has developed a new 'roadmap' intended to guide students to more rewarding futures via an education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.
The roadmap in this case is a chart that serves as a brainstorming tool to help high school students to develop STEM-related commercialization and business plans in a $2 million statewide competition, the academy said.
7 Days of STEM Festival Kicks Off Monday
Friday, September 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- It’s not quite walking on water, but the non-Newtonian fluid that will fill a tank being prepared in the Oh Wow! Center downtown will allow people to dash across it – assuming they can do that fast enough to not break surface tension.
The tank represents one of the exhibits and demonstrations to be presented during this year’s Silly Science Sunday, which will cap the 7 Days of STEM Youngstown Regional Science & Technology Festival that kicks off Monday.
Ohio OKs $298K for YSU 3-D Printing Equipment
Tuesday, September 09, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The State Controlling Board voted Monday to approve $298,773 for equipment purchases to support additive manufacturing training at Youngstown State University.
The funds will be used to purchase a vacuum sintering furnace for $143,288 from TevTech LLC, of North Billerica, Mass., and an in-situ non-contact metrology AIM system from M-7 Technologies Inc. in Youngstown. TevTech submitted the lowest of four bids for the furnace and M-7 was the sole bidder for its system, according to Controlling Board documents.
