Kmart Nets $155 Million for Second Quarter
Monday, August 16, 2004TROY, Mich. -- Kmart Holding Corp. today reported net income of $155 million, or $1.54 per diluted share, for the 13 weeks ended July 28. Comparatively, the company reported a net loss of $5 million, 6 cents per diluted share, for the same period last year.Second-quarter operating income was $275 million, or 5.7% of sales, compared to $10 million, or 0.2% of sales, for the same period in 2003.
New Homes Get New Start in Youngstown
Monday, August 16, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ribbon-cutting ceremonies for 36 new homes took place this afternoon, according to a report from Common Wealth Inc. Northside Homes, developed by Common Wealth, are affordable for low- and moderate-income residents of Youngstown, officials say.On Broadway just west of Belmont Avenue, four new houses have been constructed on adjacent vacant lots, the report stated. Stoneridge Makes Passage to India
Monday, August 16, 2004WARREN, Ohio -- In a joint venture with Ashok Minda Group, Stoneridge Inc. plans to manufacture electronic instrumentation equipment for the automotive and truck markets in India and the surrounding countries, officials announced earlier today. Plans include expanding Minda's existing plant in Pune, India, to produce electronic instrumentation equipment, according to Edward F. Mosel, chief operating officer of Stoneridge.The plant currently manufactures mechanical instrumentation equipment.

New Castle Gets $2.1M for Downtown Revitalization

Rendell and Dennis Yablonsky, state economic development secretary, presented a check in that amount to Mayor Wayne Alexander during a visit to Lawrence County.On Saturday, Rendell and Yablonsky brought $12 million to Mercer County for economic development development projects (read story).The funds will be used to support the city's revitalization plan, now in the second phase, and will help fund four proposed projects, according to a report from Rendell's office:Riverwalk Park.

Smith warned summer graduates of Youngstown State University against greed and selfishness "your greatest enemy " at today's summer commencement ceremonies.Some 450 students received diplomas this morning, where Smith, chairman of Compco Industries and Diamond Steel Construction Co., received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. Avalon Holdings Cuts Operating Losses in Half

(AMEX:AWX) cut its losses from continuing operations in half for the first six months of 2004 compared to the first six months of 2003, the company reported late Friday.
