New Homes Get New Start in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ribbon-cutting ceremonies for 36 new homes took place this afternoon, according to a report from Common Wealth Inc. Northside Homes, developed by Common Wealth, are affordable for low- and moderate-income residents of Youngstown, officials say.On Broadway just west of Belmont Avenue, four new houses have been constructed on adjacent vacant lots, the report stated. These four-bedroom homes are part of 10 sponsored by Common Wealth to the north of St. Elizabeth Health Center.Northside Homes also will offer 26 homes for qualified families on Youngtown's northeast side on Benford Lane and Megan Circle. The homes were co-developed by Common Wealth, a nonprofit community development corporation, and NRP Group, according to the report.Two developments -- award-winning Youngstown Sheet and Tube worker homes on Jackson Street in Campbell, Ohio, and the historic YMCA in Steubenville, Ohio -- are on the National Historic Register, according to the report. The Steubenville property was retrofitted into 35 apartments for seniors, officials said. Financial assistance with development came by way of housing tax credits and historic tax credits, which were used in conjunction with grants from the Ohio Department of Development and the city of Youngstown, financing from the Ohio Housing Finance Fund, Sky Bank, Ohio Capital Corp. for Housing, the Affordable Housing Program of The Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, and the Ohio Community Development Finance Fund. At today's ceremonies, Doug Garver, new executive director of the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, was the featured speaker, the report stated.According to the report, Common Wealth has focused on inner city redevelopment since 1989, working in Youngstown, Campbell, Struthers, East Liverpool, Steubenville, Lisbon, Sebring, Beloit, East Alliance, and Columbiana to build new homes and/or renovate existing structures.
