New Castle Gets $2.1M for Downtown Revitalization
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Four city projects got a $2.1 million boost yesterday as Gov. Edward G. Rendell and Dennis Yablonsky, state economic development secretary, presented a check in that amount to Mayor Wayne Alexander during a visit to Lawrence County.On Saturday, Rendell and Yablonsky brought $12 million to Mercer County for economic development development projects (read story).The funds will be used to support the city's revitalization plan, now in the second phase, and will help fund four proposed projects, according to a report from Rendell's office:Riverwalk Park. The area along the Neshannock River between Mill Street and East Washington Street will be transformed into a pedestrian park and include an outdoor stage that will be used for summer concerts, festivals, and craft shows.Zambelli Plaza. Named in honor of the Zambelli family, who donated the property for the project, this area will be transformed into a green space in one of downtown's main intersections.Troutman's Bridge. Located adjacent to Riverwalk Park, the bridge will be architecturally refurbished to blend in with surrounding streetscape and parks.Grant Street Park. This park will include benches and picnic-like tables and chairs and is expected to entice people to spend time downtown during lunch breaks and on weekends.This work will complement $10 million in renovations already completed by the city and private developers, the report stated."
