Smith Tells YSU Grads Beware of Greed, Selfishness"
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio Businessman Clarence R. Smith warned summer graduates of Youngstown State University against greed and selfishness "your greatest enemy " at today's summer commencement ceremonies.Some 450 students received diplomas this morning, where Smith, chairman of Compco Industries and Diamond Steel Construction Co., received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. Smith was awarded the 2004 Distinguished Citizen Award in July. He was a major contributor to the construction of Stambaugh Stadium. In 2001, he donated much of his rock and gemstone collection to the YSU Geology Department. He also is an active member of the Penguin Club.Smith, a native and resident of Boardman who serves as chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party, reminded the graduates and others in attendance of YSU's importance to the Mahoning Valley. "All of us must continue to learn and reach into the future to make this great nation survive and grow," he said. "All of your continued leadership and effort will make our Valley grow and prosper." He also reminded the graduates of everything they have learned over the years good and bad. "There is nothing in this world you cannot accomplish if it is right and your desire is strong enough and you are willing to work...Life is a gift from God.Use it well," he said. "Know that your greatest enemy is greed and selfishness." Also addressing graduates was Danielle Rae Jack of Niles, who received a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. Jack, who plans to pursue a master's degree at YSU in inorganic chemistry, is the recipient of the Scudder Physical Chemistry Award and the Hypercube Scholars Award.Visit Youngstown State University at www.ysu.edu"
