Akron-Canton Sets All-Time Passenger Record in 2012
Thursday, January 31, 2013GREEN, Ohio -- Records were broken at every level last year at the Akron-Canton Airport. Not only was it the busiest year in the history of the airport, 2012 marked the third consecutive record-breaking year, Rick McQueen, president and CEO said Wednesday.
A total of 1,838,083 customers traveled to and from Akron-Canton during the year, bettering 2011 by more than 173,686 -- a 10.4% increase. In addition, the December was a record breaker with more than 173,686 total passengers, up 5% compared to December 2011. December also marked the 21st consecutive monthly increase.

McClendon Out as CEO of Chesapeake Energy Corp.

McClendon, the embattled co-founder and CEO of Chesapeake Energy Corp. “has agreed to retire from the company April 1,” Chesapeake announced at the close of trading Tuesday. In the next sentence of its statement, the company reported “its extensive review of alleged conflicts of interest and other matters involving McClendon has to date found no improper conduct.” A final report is due to be completed in mid-February.
Landfill Has No Plans to Accept Solidified Brine
Wednesday, January 30, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A three-page advisory issued in September by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency that raises the possibility of landfills in the state accepting solidified brine is a nonstarter for at least one such operation in the Mahoning Valley, its division manager said Tuesday.
“The rules are very specific,” said Mike Heher, division manager at Republic Services' Carbon Limestone Landfill in Poland Township. “Landfills cannot take brine, and we don’t.”

Mellon Foundation Gives $4M to Grove City College
Wednesday, January 30, 2013GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Richard King Mellon Foundation, based in Pittsburgh, has given Grove City College $4 million to build its science, engineering and mathematics building.
The gift was announced Tuesday by the president of Grove City, Richard G. Jewell, Class of 1967.
The Mellon Foundation had given $500,000 earlier toward construction of the 63,000-square-foot building scheduled to open in time for the fall semester. The building is part of the college’s $90 million capital campaign, “Grove City Matters.”
Kent Trumbull Lands Spring Enrollment 'Three-peat'
Wednesday, January 30, 2013WARREN, Ohio -- Enrollment for the spring semester at Kent State University Trumbull Campus, Champion Township, stands at 3,141 students, Dean Robert Sines anounced Tuesday.
This marks the third straight spring semester that enrollment surpassed 3,000.
The spring 2012 figure of 3,255 was Kent State Trumbull’s all-time enrollment high and the streak began with the spring 2011 figure of 3,046.
This spring’s figures are based on the official 15-day figures.

YSU Fundraising Hits Record $6.7 Million
Wednesday, January 30, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohioi -- It’s only six months into the fiscal year, and Youngstown State University has already set a record for fundraising, the school announced Tuesday.
The university reported receiving $6,667,861 in contributions and commitments from alumni and other supporters during the first six months of the 2012-13 fiscal year. The previous fundraising record of $6,368,422 was established during the entire 2007-08 fiscal year.
People’s Garden Program Seeks Applications
