New Rules Impede Efforts to Clean Up Brownfields
Tuesday, January 29, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Four local sites are undergoing environmental assessments under the Clean Ohio program, but local officials are concerned that funding remediation at the sites will be more difficult under rules now in place for the program.
The new rules have eliminated the development-ready track for the program, leaving in place a track providing funds to remediate sites with an end user identified for a property, said Dan Mamula, manager of the Mahoning River Corridor Initiative.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio – The State Controlling Board voted Monday to approve $2.1 million in Third Frontier program funds to Youngstown State University for the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.
The institute, which was announced last August as the pilot in a network of centers focusing on manufacturing, was awarded $30 million in federal funds, and the state’s contribution represents part of the matching funds for the $69 million center. The Ohio Third Frontier Commission approved the funding last year.

Middlefield Banc Earns Record 2012 Net Income
Tuesday, January 29, 2013MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio – Middlefield Banc Corp. holding company of the Middlefield Banking Co., Monday reported fourth-quarter net income of $1.27 million, or 64 cents per diluted share, compared to $1.33 million, or 76 cents per share the same quarter in 2011.
For all of 2012, Middlefield had net income of $6.28 million, a record, exceeding 2011 net income by 52.1%. On a per share basis, the bank earned $3.28 per share in 2012 compared to $2.45 in 2011, a 33.9% increase.

Ohio OKs Tax Credits for Ohio Star Forge Expansion
Monday, January 28, 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio --The Ohio Tax Credit Authority today approved $107,483 in job creation tax credits for Ohio Star Forge, which is considering a nearly $20 million expansion project at its facility at 4000 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Champion Township. The award is one of 11 the tax credit authority approved today, which combined are expected to result in more than $20 million in new payroll.
BP Files First Trumbull County Well Applications
Monday, January 28, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The first three applications for test wells related to BP Energy's oil and gas exploration in Trumbull County show that the energy giant is assessing an area just east of Mosquito Lake before its drilling program begins in April, according to state records.
Brammer Engineering, a gas-and oil-services company based in Shreveport, La., has submitted three applications for test wells in Gustavus, Johnston and Kinsman townships, says data submitted to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
December Home Sales in Area Show Price Gains
Monday, January 28, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The combined price of homes sold in Mahoning County last month rose nearly a third from the same period in 2011, information released by the Youngstown/Columbiana Association of Realtors shows.
In Mahoning County, the total dollar value of homes sold in December was $16.34 million, up from $12.39 million in December 2011, according to the monthly report. The average sale price for a house in December was $94,439, compared with $77,917 a year earlier. Sale prices ranged from $1,000 to $698,000.
