ELCH Nurses Nix Contract, Stops Merger with HMHP
Friday, June 27, 2014EAST LIVERPOOL -- The rejection of a contract offer by nurses at East Liverpool City Hospital appears to have also nixed the hospital’s pending merger with Humility of Mary Health Partners -- and put the future of the hospital itself in doubt, administrators say.
Nurses filed a 10-day strike notice May 31 then withdrew it and returned to the bargaining table. The sticking point reportedly is the hospital's demand for 16-hour shifts without overtime pay.
Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Begins $1.9M Project
Friday, June 27, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley has begun construction and renovations to the Special Care Nursery and Pediatric Inpatient Unit on its Beeghly campus. The inpatient unit will have more room to expand, while the SCN will provide private rooms for all patient families, officials said.
The budget for the entire project is $1.9 million, and the project is expected to be completed in the fall.

MVHS Camp: 10,000 Years of History in 5 Days

Kent State, Eastern Gateway Sign Articulation Agreement
Friday, June 27, 2014KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University and Eastern Gateway Community College, Steubenville, have signed an agreement allowing for the easy transfer of credits, allowing more students to pursue bachelor’s degrees. The new agreement facilitates transfer of courses between Eastern Gateway Community College’s associate of applied business degree in business management technology and Kent State’s bachelor of technical and applied Studies in applied business.
Foreclosure Rates, Mortgage Delinquencies Down in April
Thursday, June 26, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Foreclosure rates in Youngstown-Warren-Boardman decreased for the month of April over the same period last year, according to newly released data from CoreLogic.
The CoreLogic data reveals that the rate of Youngstown-Warren-Boardman area foreclosures among outstanding mortgage loans was 2.60% for the month of April, a decrease of 1.33 percentage points compared to April 2013 when the rate was 3.93%.
Still, Foreclosure activity in Youngstown-Warren-Boardman was higher than the national foreclosure rate, which was 1.77% for April 2014.
11% of Cleveland CIOs Plan IT Team Expansion
Thursday, June 26, 2014CLEVELAND -- Just 11% of Cleveland-area technology executives expect to expand their information-technology teams in the second half of this year, finds a Robert Half survey released Wednesday. That's down from 12% from the January-June survey.
In addition, 75% plan to hire only for open IT slots, 12% plan to put hiring plans on hold, and 1% expect to reduce IT staff between July 1 and Dec, 31, according to the Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Forecase and Local Trend Report.

Ashta Plans $60M Upgrade; Velocys Buys Pinto Energy
Thursday, June 26, 2014ASHTABULA, Ohio – The industrial base of Ashtabula County got two shots in the arm Wednesday with announcements that Ashta Chemicals Inc. plans to invest $60 million to upgrade its plant here and that Velocys plc, a British company, has acquired Pinto Energy LLC and will take over its $200 million gas-to-liquids project planned for the lakeshore.
Ryan, Brown Write PUCO in Favor of Warren Steel
Thursday, June 26, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- Two federal lawmakers are urging the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to give Warren Steel Holdings "all due consideration" in its request for a reduction in electricity rates, saying that a plant closing would be "devastating" for the community.
In a letter drafted June 20 to PUCO Chairman Tom Johnson, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, emphasized that hundreds of jobs in Warren would be affected should the operation close.
