Boyd Scholarship Aids Minority Students in Health Careers
Monday, June 23, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Joan J. and Willard L. Boyd have established a scholarship at Youngstown State University designed to help qualified minority students who want to pursue a degree in health or medically related careers in clinical laboratory science.
Applicants must be minority students majoring in either the two- or four-year clinical laboratory program at YSU, be enrolled full-time and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, be a resident of northeastern Ohio or western Pennsylvania, and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (Fafsa).
Ohio Unemployment Declines to 5.5% in May
Saturday, June 21, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ohio’s unemployment rate was down again in May, declining to 5.5% from 5.7% in April, which was down from 6.1% the month before, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Friday.
Nonfarm wage and salary employment increased by 2,900 over the month, from a revised 5,295,400 in April to 5,298,300 in May. The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in May was 317,000, down 11,000 from 328,000 in April. The number of unemployed has decreased by 108,000 in the past 12 months from 425,000. In May 2013, the Ohio unemployment rate was 7.4%.
Tressel Gets an Early Start as YSU President
Friday, June 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Officially, Jim Tressel doesn't begin his term as the ninth president of Youngstown State University until July 1. Unofficially, he has been on the job since the board of trustees chose him May 12.
Friday, with interim President Ikram Khawaja using his remaining vacation days until his contract expires, Tressel moved into the president’s office in Tod Hall as acting president, giving himself a 10-day head start.
He is serving those 10 days without pay.
Fans Line Up for Tickets to Rod Stewart at Covelli
Friday, June 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- As of 9:30 this morning, about 80 people -- some standing, some relaxing in lawn chairs – were waiting outside the Covelli Centre hoping to snag tickets to one of the biggest shows ever held at the arena.
Ticket sales for rock superstar Rod Stewart's August 24 appearance here went on sale at 10 a.m., but a few showed up early so they could grab the best seats in the house.
"I've been here since 5 a.m.," said Shirley Mayti of Austintown, who along with three of her friends camped just outside the box office doors awaiting first dibs on the best tickets.
Poland Business Group Hosts Walking Tour June 28
Friday, June 20, 2014POLAND, Ohio -- The newly formed Poland Village Business Association will host its inaugural event, a business walking tour, June 28 during Celebrate Poland. The group will set up a booth and the tour runs from Village Hall to Town One Square.
Jack Kravitz, owner of Kravitz Delicatessen and a founding member of the association, said that the event was created to showcase what Poland businesses have to offer.
“There had to be something we could do to bring interest and recognition to the village,” Kravitz said.
YSU Honors Rigelhaupt Pre-Law Scholarships Winners
Friday, June 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Recipients of the 2014-15 Judge Sidney Rigelhaupt and Attorney Bert Rigelhaupt Pre-Law Scholarship were honored at a Thursdayin Williamson Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University.
The scholarships, funded by a $1 million trust held by the Farmers Trust Co., are intended to help YSU students from Mahoning and Trumbull counties who plan to attend law school after earning their undergraduate degrees from YSU.
More than 60 students have benefitted from the scholarship since its inception in 2007. In that time, nearly $350,000 has been awarded.
20 Federal Place Gets New Tenant as City Mulls Sale
Friday, June 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A video production company whose client list includes Google and Pepsi along with several familiar local clients will relocate to 20 Federal Place Sept. 1.
Cinemanix Productions will lease the seventh-floor space previously occupied by Phar-Mor Productions, the video production arm of the defunct Phar-Mor Inc., and more recently Accent Media. The Board of Control approved a two-year lease for the 2,535-square-foot space at its meeting Thursday morning.
Small, Noisy, Crawly and Delicious Crickets

These inhabitants are in plastic storage bins – the same ones you buy at any discount store – whose lids have been partially cut open and screened. As you look inside the bins, their contents wiggle, jump, crawl and, yes, chirp.
PNC Offers Merchants New Mobile Reader Service
Friday, June 20, 2014PITTSBURGH – PNC Bank has begun offering merchants a mobile reader service through Pogo, a point-of-sale system that connects to a personal technology device such as a smartphone, supported by Apple iOS or Android operating systems.
The bank announced the new product Thursday.
Access to funds occurs as soon as the next day when a merchant connects with his PNC account to Pogo from PNC Bank, according to the announcement.
