Friday, August 06, 2004By Andrea WoodYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Mahoning Valley is one of just seven television markets in the country where a highly controversial ad that accuses John Kerry of lying about his Vietnam war record will be broadcast this weekend. The ad, paid for by a group that calls itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, claims the Democratic presidential nominee (and nine of his Vietnam crew mates) fabricated stories to secure his medals for bravery -- and then betrayed everyone who served in Vietnam by opposing the war after he returned home.
'Fahrenheit 9/11' Shifts Political Opinion by Few Degrees
Friday, August 06, 2004PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Moore's movie, Fahrenheit 9/11, has attracted about as many people as Rush Limbaugh's radio broadcasts, but the election-year film appears to have changed few minds, according to the latest installment of the ongoing national survey conducted by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center.Forty-one percent of the Moore moviegoers said the picture made them think worse of George W. Bush, according to the survey, but that claim should be treated skeptically because three fifths of those people were Democrats to begin with.
Youngstown Air Reserve Station Salutes Area Employers
Friday, August 06, 2004VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- The red carpet will be rolled out tomorrow at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station for the owners and managers of area businesses that employ members of the Air Force Reserve.The occassion is the 910th Airlift Wing's annual "Employer Awareness Day" that features special events and tours of the air base. "The goal is to increase the awareness civilian employers have of the important role Air Force reservists play in the defense of the United States," said Master Sgt. Bryan Ripple.
Wireless Minutes: You Don't Get What You Pay For
Friday, August 06, 2004MIAMI -- More than three quarters (78%) of the wireless minutes paid for by consumers go unused on a monthly basis, finds a new survey of the wireless industry by TNS Telecoms, a market information company. The survey also revealed that the average wireless household pays $17.75 more each month than the cost of their monthly rate plan. Factoring in taxes, fees and additional charges, consumers may be paying five times the advertised rate per minute of their contracted rate plan.The survey was commissioned by TracFone Wireless, a provider of prepaid wireless service.

"Bad News on Jobs Front; 32,000 Jobs Created in July"
Thursday, August 05, 2004"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The U.S. Labor Department today reported only 32,000 new jobs were created during the month of July -- considerably less than the government and economic forecasters had predicted and bad news for the president's re-election campaign. Compounding the bad news was the fact that small payroll increases recorded in May and June were revised downward by a total 61,000 jobs. The only good news in the jobs report was the unemployment rate fell to 5.5% in July, down one-tenth of a percent, and manufacturing jobs actually increased by 10,000.Still, the U.S.

Labor Department to Release July Jobs Report Friday
Thursday, August 05, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The U.S. Labor Department is poised to release official estimates of the total number of new jobs created during July. The monthly jobs report, a closely watched barometer of the nation's economy that will be announced at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, is expected to be relatively good news, according to two business news services.The Reuters news service said it polled 24 economic forecasters this week and came up with a consensus estimate that 228,000 jobs were created in July.
Hillside Hospital Nurses Ratify 3-Year Contract

The 25-nurse bargaining unit, a local union of the Ohio Nurses Association, ratified the contract just days after 720 ONA members at Forum Health's Northside Medical Center ratified their contract."Once again, we have seen the benefits of belonging to the ONA collective bargaining program.
International Steel to Expand Operations at Cleveland Works
Thursday, August 05, 2004RICHFIELD, Ohio -- International Steel Group Inc. (NYSE:ISG) today announced it will expand operations at the company's Cleveland Works by converting an idled continuous anneal line to a hot-dip galvanizing line.The total cost of the project is likely to be $40 million, the company said, and result in at least 50 new jobs. The new line is expected to begin production by the fourth quarter of 2005, and have an operating capacity of about 500,000 tons per year."This investment represents a significant step in the growth of our operations at the Cleveland Works," said Rodney B.
