Thursday, August 05, 2004By Norman SolomonThe same broadcast networks that eagerly devote endless prime-time hours to vacuous sitcoms and unreal "reality shows" couldn't spare a total of more than a few hours last week for live coverage of the Democratic National Convention. It's true that complaining about scant news coverage from NBC, ABC and CBS is a bit like griping about small portions of meals from restaurants that serve lousy food. But still, the conventions are worth watching, if only to keep up with the rhetorical needles that party strategists are trying to thread these days.

Thursday, August 05, 2004CHICAGO -- United States Cellular Corporation and TDS Telecom, subsidiaries of Telephone and Data Systems Inc., have entered into definitive agreements to sell certain wireless properties to Alltel Corp. of Little Rock, Ark., for a total of approximately $143 million in cash (approximately $111 million after taxes), including working capital that is subject to adjustment upon close of the transactions.The transactions are subject to regulatory approvals and are expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2004.The U.S.
O'Horo Gets $1.62M Contract for Convocation Center
Thursday, August 05, 2004By George NelsonYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The city's Board of Control this morning approved more than $1.7 million in construction contracts for the Youngstown Convocation Center project, and authorized the rebidding plumbing and elevator work. The city awarded a contract totaling $1.62 million to the A.P. O'Horo Co., Liberty, for foundation and miscellaneous structural steel work on the site. "This is getting the building out of the ground," said Carmen Conglose, deputy director of public works.
Youngstown Buick to Buy Spartan Chevrolet
Thursday, August 05, 2004BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The owners of Youngstown Buick Pontiac GMC today announced an agreement to purchase neighboring Spartan Chevrolet. Terms were not disclosed.The deal, which is contingent upon approval from General Motors, puts Youngstown Buick in good position to capitalize on the upcoming launch of the GM Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cobalt. "It's an exciting time for Chevrolet, in particular in the Mahoning Valley with the fall launch of the Lordstown-built Cobalt, and we have big ambitions for this franchise," said Dave Sweeney, Youngstown Buick dealer and president.

In a new survey, 36% of CFOs said if they could change one thing about their current position, they would work fewer hours.Less meetings and more forgiving deadlines -- two other time-oriented answers -- were the next most frequently cited responses, at 17% and 12%, respectively.The survey was developed by Robert Half Management Resources, a provider of senior-level accounting and finance professionals on a project and interim basis.
Industrial Market Improves After Disappointing First Quarter
Thursday, August 05, 2004BOSTON -- Industrial real estate markets improved markedly in the second quarter, with 38.4 million square feet of absorption, compared with only 9.8 million square feet during the first quarter, according to a recent survey of North American markets by Colliers International, a global commercial real estate firm.Year-to-date absorption is 48.2 million square feet, and as a result, Colliers has revised downward its forecast for industrial absorption in 2004 and now believes the market will absorb only 110 to 120 million square feet during the year, down from its earlier prediction of 150 milli
