ODNR: Fracking Triggered Quakes, New Permit Rules
Friday, April 11, 2014POLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohiio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says its geologists believe that the series of earthquakes that took place last month at the site of Hilcorp's well pad here at the Carbon Limestone Landfill was triggered by "sand and water injected into the well during the hydraulic fracturing process that may have increased pressure on an unknown microfault in the area."
Study Spells Out Pluses, Minuses of Shale Drilling
Friday, April 11, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A case study released Thursday shows that while oil and gas exploration in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays has led to economic benefits for the region, it's also brought new challenges to rural communities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The Multi-State Shale Research Collaborative -- composed of six think tanks across five states -- studied four counties where shale development is most active: Carroll County, Ohio; Greene and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania; and Wetzel County in West Virginia.
More Drilling Permits for Southern Utica – Not Here
Tuesday, April 08, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Oil and gas companies are continuing to heavily focus their resources on the southern tier of the Utica shale in eastern Ohio, largely ignoring -- at least for now -- the northern portion of the play that includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Nearly all 19 permits issued last week for horizontal gas wells in the Utica were in counties in or south of Carroll County, a region that's boasted some of the best well results thus far.
