More Drilling Permits for Southern Utica – Not Here
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Oil and gas companies are continuing to heavily focus their resources on the southern tier of the Utica shale in eastern Ohio, largely ignoring -- at least for now -- the northern portion of the play that includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Nearly all 19 permits issued last week for horizontal gas wells in the Utica were in counties in or south of Carroll County, a region that's boasted some of the best well results thus far.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources awarded seven new permits to Eclipse Resources LP for wells in Guernsey County, five permits to Antero Resources in Noble County, and four permits to Chesapeake Exploration LP in Carroll County.
Also, EnerVest Operating was awarded two permits for wells in Tuscarawas County while XTO Energy, a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil, received a single permit to drill in Belmont County, ODNR records show.
No new permits were issued last week for Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties in the northern tier of the Utica.
Since 2010, there have been 1,202 permits issued, 810 horizontal wells drilled, and 389 put into production in the Ohio portion of the Utica shale, according to ODNR.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection reported it issued no new permits last week for the western Pennsylvania counties of Mercer and Lawrence, just across the Ohio border.
