"Self-Employment Up Sharply for Women, Blacks, and Latinos "
Wednesday, December 08, 2004"WASHINGTON -- Self-employment rates for women, blacks, and Latinos have risen sharply since 1979, according to a new study by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. During the period, self-employment rates increased across ethnic groups and gender, with an overall increase of more than five percent."Self-employment provides the main source of income for a diverse group of over 12 million Americans," said Thomas M. Sullivan, chief counsel for the SBA office.
Obstructions Add Costs to Convocation Center Project
Wednesday, December 08, 2004"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Board of Control this morning approved paying an additional $48,252 to A.P. O'Horo Co., Liberty, for work on the Youngstown Convocation Center site. O'Horo, which in August was awarded a $1.62 million contract for foundation and miscellaneous structural steel work on the site, encountered obstructions in drilling 13 augur cast pile locations for the foundation that could not be pierced using normal equipment, said Carmen Conglose, Youngstown's deputy director of public works. The contractor had to bring in a special rig to complete the drilling.
Striking Vindy Employees Vote to Reject Contract Offer
Wednesday, December 08, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- By a three to one margin, striking employees at The Vindicator today voted to reject what the company had called its final and best offer. The vote came three weeks after 175 members of the Youngstown Newspaper Guild set up picket lines outside the offices of the Mahoning Valley's largest newspaper. The union -- Local 34011 of The Newspaper Guild -- Communications Workers of America -- represents reporters, photographers, page designers, classified ad and circulation personnel.
Ohio Star Forge Plans $10M Expansion
Wednesday, December 08, 2004By Dan O'BrienCHAMPION, Ohio -- A steel company that sits on property once occupied by one of the Mahoning Valley's largest manufacturers intends to spend between $10 million and $13.2 million to revamp its operations.Mark Zigmont, a planner for the Trumbull County Planning Commission, said today that Ohio Star Forge is planning renovations to its plant and expects to add to its work force.The company has applied for tax abatements of 60% over 10 years on these investments, Zigmont reported.
ISG Gets Tax Exemption, Will Upgrade Coke Plant"
Wednesday, December 08, 2004WARREN, Ohio -- The International Steel Group, Richfield, Ohio, will begin a 10-year, $13 million capital improvement project to upgrade and modernize its coke-making facility in Warren Township as a result of a new agreement with the Warren City Schools Board of Education, officials announced recently. The agreement provides for a 100% exemption of new real and personal property taxes arising from the capital improvements made at the plant.In return, ISG will make payments in lieu of tax to the school district equal to 25% of the tax that would have been due if there was no exemption.
Ohio Consumer Affairs Warns of 'Advance Fee' Loan Scam
Wednesday, December 08, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio's Office of Consumer Affairs issued a warning today that UniSource Financial Data Management purportedly operating out of a fictitious Akron address is attempting to place ads claiming that they can assist consumers in obtaining credit and mortgage loans. "UniSource has falsely claimed that it is licensed to conduct such business in Ohio, and has provided a nonexistent address for its Akron office location," saidF. Scott O'Donnell, state superintendent of financial institutions.

Hooters Air flights will begin offering nonstop jet service between Pittsburgh and Myrtle Beach, S.C., Feb. 10, 2005 -- just in time for the Myrtle Beach golf season, Allegheny County Airport Authority officials announced yesterday. Some time ago, Western Reserve Port Authority officials were courting the airline in the hope similar service could be offered at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, but those efforts failed to come to fruition.
