Thursday, December 09, 2004"TROY, Mich. -- Delphi Corp. today said it could lose as much as $77 million this year -- and possibly as much as $350 million in 2005.The company blamed the sharp downturn on low production volumes and commodity price increases. As a result, 8,500 hourly workers will be cut from its global work force -- 3,000 in the United States -- and the long-term viability of three U.S. manufacturing facilities will be evaluated.The facilities are the Kettering and Home Avenue / Vandalia plants in Ohio and the Laurel, Miss., plant.Delphi's Packard Electric Division is based in Warren, Ohio.
"Area Car Dealers Move Over 4,000 Vehicles in November"
Thursday, December 09, 2004"VIENNA, Ohio -- Mahoning Valley auto dealers sold 4,416 vehicles in November, according to the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio's monthly report. Dealers sold 1,513 new cars and 766 new trucks for the month, and 1,586 used cars and 551 used trucks. Auto dealers report selling 53,772 vehicles so far this year, down from 54,712 for the first 11 months of 2003. Youngstown Buick/Pontiac/GMC led Mahoning County and the three-county region in sales for the month, selling 343 vehicles in November.
Consumer Reports Launches Best Buy Drugs Web Site
Thursday, December 09, 2004"WASHINGTON -- The Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, this week launched an educational initiative and Web site, www.CRBestBuyDrugs.org, that will compare a variety of prescription drugs on price, effectiveness and safety. The first reports to be released compare drugs in three widely-used categories: cholesterol-lowering medication, heartburn and acid reflux treatments, and anti-inflammatories commonly used to treat arthritis. The site eventually will compare approximately 20 categories of the most widely used drugs based on price and scientific evidence.
Obstructions Add Costs to Convocation Center Project
Thursday, December 09, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Board of Control this morning approved paying an additional $48,252 to A.P. O'Horo Co., Liberty, for work on the Youngstown Convocation Center site. O'Horo, which in August was awarded a $1.62 million contract for foundation and miscellaneous structural steel work on the site, encountered obstructions in drilling 13 augur cast pile locations for the foundation that could not be pierced using normal equipment, said Carmen Conglose, Youngstown's deputy director of public works. The contractor had to bring in a special rig to complete the drilling.
Self-Employment Up Sharply for Women, Blacks, and Latinos "
Thursday, December 09, 2004WASHINGTON -- Self-employment rates for women, blacks, and Latinos have risen sharply since 1979, according to a new study by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. During the period, self-employment rates increased across ethnic groups and gender, with an overall increase of more than five percent."Self-employment provides the main source of income for a diverse group of over 12 million Americans," said Thomas M. Sullivan, chief counsel for the SBA office.
