Crain's Cleveland Names Farmers to 'Fast 50' List
Tuesday, November 04, 2014CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Crain’s Cleveland Business has named Farmers National Bank to its “Fast 50” list of successful companies, the bank announced this morning.
To develop the list, Crain’s partnered with independent accounting and business advisory firm Apple Growth Partners to review financial records for companies headquartered in northeastern Ohio. Crain’s then ranked the 50 fastest-growing companies by revenue between 2009 and 2013. The publication stated it was looking for an established record of continuous growth.
Cortland Bancorp Net Income Rises to $955,000
Tuesday, November 04, 2014CORTLAND, Ohio -- Cortland Bancorp, holding company of Cortland Banks, Monday reported third-quarter net income of $955,000, or 21 cents per share -- a 55% increase above third-quarter 2013 net income.
Net income for the first nine months is $3.33 million, or 73 cents a share, a 48% increase above the $2.27 million for the first three quarters of 2013, or 50 cents a share.
The board of directors declared a cash dividend of five cents a share payable Nov. 28 to shareholders of record Nov. 12.
Ohio Ranked 5th for Best Business Climate
Tuesday, November 04, 2014ATLANTA -- Site Selection magazine has ranked Ohio as having the fifth-best business climate this year and reports a separate survey by corporate real estate executives it polled ranked the Buckeye State as having the ninth-best business climate.
Site Selection, which released its annual rankings Monday, “named Georgia as the state with the Top Business Climate for 2014. The rankings are published in the November issue of the trade journal.
As Cyber Threats Rise, Need for Insurance Grows

Say a professional or business owner accidentally leaves behind his laptop or electronic tablet at a restaurant or park bench. No matter. The devices can be replaced and are often covered by property insurance the business or owner carries.

Community Health Systems Revenues Up 51%
Tuesday, November 04, 2014FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Net operating revenues for Community Health Systems Inc. during the third quarter and the first nine months of the year were up more than 50% and 42%, respectively, from the same periods in 2013, the company reported Monday. The data includes Health Management Associates Inc.’s operating results from Jan. 27, when CHS completed its acquisition of HMA.

Chevrolet Cruze Sales Up 51% in October
Tuesday, November 04, 2014DETROIT -- Sales of the Lordstown, Ohio-built Chevrolet Cruze rose 51% in October, General Motors Co. reported Monday, driving compact car sales to their highest level since 2003.
GM said it delivered 226,819 vehicles in the United States last month – the company’s best October sales since 2007. Still, the number is up only slightly from October 2013 when GM delivered 226,402 units, or a gain of just 0.2%.
VEC Donates $5K, Mentoring to Sister Jerome's Poor
Tuesday, November 04, 2014GIRARD. Ohio -- Valley Electrical Consolidated Inc. awarded a $5,000 grant to Sister Jerome’s Poor to sponsor a local college student as well as to provide mentoring for the student.
The check for sponsorship was presented to Sister Jerome Corcoran at VEC’s headquarters Oct. 31.
Upon graduating from Eastern Gateway Community College in June, Brianna Spatafore will continue her education at Youngstown State University. Tricia Ferry of VEC will mentor Spatafore during this time.
Akron Children’s Adds Specialty Services in Warren
Monday, November 03, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Beginning Nov. 17, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will offer specialty services including cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, urology, lab and radiology at its Warren office.
The 5,000-square-foot space at The Market Place, 5000 E. Market St., features nine exam rooms, three assessment rooms, ultrasound, lab draw area, radiology room, echocardiogram room, nurses’ stations and physician charting area. Akron Children’s will host a community open house Saturday from 1-3 p.m. to show the space.
YSU Moves Up in Magazine's Rankings
Monday, November 03, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University ranks among the top 25% of similar universities and colleges nationally in Washington Monthly’s 2013 College Guide and Rankings, the university announced today.
The magazine’s rankings list schools based on the social mobility of their students, research and community service.
“Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low-income students, help them graduate, and don’t charge them an arm and a leg to attend,” the magazine said.
