Ohio Records 6,358 New-Business Filings in November
Monday, December 17, 2012COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A total of 6,358 entities filed to do business in Ohio in November, the office of secretary of state reports. These numbers are down slightly from November 2011 when 6,663 new entities filed with the office.
New-business filings are classified as forms submitted to the Ohio secretary of state that declare the formation of a business entity, including for-profit, nonprofit and professional corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships.
Gibson Insurance Seeks Votes for Donations

The agency has compiled a list of eight Mahoning Valley charities/nonprofit organizations and seeks the public’s vote in deciding the organization that receives the top prize of $4,000.
Youngstown Foundation Awards $3.1M in Grants
Monday, December 17, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Twelve organizations in the Mahoning Valley have been awarded grants that total $183,704.54 by the distribution committee of The Youngstown Foundation.
The meeting of Dec. 4 recognized the successful relocation of the Foundation offices to the City Centre One Building, the launch of the Y-Star program and more than $3 million in grants awarded throughout the year to local nonprofit organizations.

Flora, executive director, says the site is a source of all information needed to identify, locate and acquire distressed properties in the county. “At www.MahoningLandBank.com, our land acquisition policies and procedures, as well as application forms, are available,” she says.

Using data and a series of maps that showed the various depths, levels of organic carbon content, and thickness of the Utica shale in eastern Ohio, the team succeeded in creating a single composite through an overlay mapping technique they hoped would identify the most likely location to drill for natural-gas liquids.

Update: Judge Approves Sale of First Place Bank
Friday, December 14, 2012WARREN, Ohio -- U.S. Judge Brandon L. Shannon this morning approved the sale of the assets of First Place Financial Corp. -- First Place Bank -- to Talmer Bancorp Inc. of Troy, Mich. The sale still must be approved by federal regulators.
The approval followed a hearing this morning in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Delaware. Talmer will pay $45 million for the bank holding company's assets plus assume $15 million of debt. Talmer has also pledged to infuse $205 million in new capital.
No Competing Bids; First Place Bank Goes to Talmer

Shannon. No qualified bidders came forward by the yesterday’s deadline and therefore the asset auction that was scheduled to take place today has been cancelled and instead a hearing on Talmer’s amended bid will go forward.
Kasich Would Use Turnpike Tolls to Back Revenue Bonds
Friday, December 14, 2012YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Gov. John Kasich wants to raise $3 billion to build, replace and repair roads and bridges across northern Ohio by issuing revenue bonds backed by tolls collected from those who use the Ohio Turnpike.
Half of that sum, $1.5 billion collected in tolls, would attract a like amount in local and federal funds, he says.
On a two-day tour across the Buckeye State, Kasich and his transportation director, Jerry Wray, stopped at Cerni Motors, Austintown, Thursday afternoon to explain and defend their proposal.
