United Way Achieves Goal, Prepares New Initiatives
Thursday, February 13, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Programs to provide mentors for at-risk girls and to get books into the hands of young children are among initiatives the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley plans to launch this year.
The United Way announced Tuesday it has exceeded the $2.5 million goal for its 2013 campaign by $5,449. The press event was held at Window World, which sponsored incentive prizes for the campaign.
Brown Promotes Increase in Tipped Minimum Wage
Thursday, February 13, 2014WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown is pushing Congress to support legislation his legislation to raise the federal tipped minimum wage for the first time in two decades from the current $2.13 per hour.
Brown's push coincides with today’s “Tipped Minimum Wage Day of Action” to call attention to the issue.
Lisbon Vista Center Opens Adult Day Services
Thursday, February 13, 2014LISBON, Ohio -- A ribbon-cutting and open house was held Wednesday to celebrate the opening of Adult Day Services at the Vista Center here.
The new unit is housed in remodeled space the enables Vista to provide activities, socialization and dining that “will encourage interaction and engagement,” said Lauren Bako, administrator.
Timken Files Registration Statement for TimkenSteel
Thursday, February 13, 2014CANTON, Ohio -- The newly formed subsidiary of the Timkin Co., TimkinSteel Corp., has filed an initial Form 10 Registration Statement with the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing reflects the Timkon Co.’s previously announced plan to pursue a spinoff of its steel business into an independent publicly traded company.

Retail, Consumer Deal Value of M&A Tops $100B
Thursday, February 13, 2014NEW YORK -- The total transaction value for 2013 of all U.S. retail and consumer entities surpassed $100 billion for the first time since 2008, the public accounting and consulting firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers reports.
Deals in the food and beverage sector and private equity investment in the apparel, footwear and accessories sector continued to drive activity in the retail and consumer segment.
Oil and Gas Pumps Up Real Estate Inquiries

Bryce Custer, real estate adviser with NAI Spring in Canton, has witnessed those changing demands. About 75% of his work deals with clients involved in the oil and gas industry, the primary focus of his efforts. Over the past two years, his company has served more than 45 companies that deal with sales, leases and option agreements totaling a market value in excess of $40 million.
Reps. Johnson, Kelly Vote Against Debt Limit Boost
Wednesday, February 12, 2014WASHINGTON --U.S. Reps. Bill Johnson and Mike Kelly voted against the one-year extension of the nation’s borrowing authority that passed the U.S. House of Representatives on a 221-201 vote, with all but 28 of the votes in favor of passage coming from Democrats.
“Only 28 House Republicans voted to assure that our nation pays its bills. They are simply unable to govern,” U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Howland, posted on Facebook.
Chesapeake Awarded Two More Permits in Utica
Wednesday, February 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued three new horizontal well permits for producers drilling the Utica shale last week, all of them in the central to southern portion of the play, records show.
Chesapeake Exploration LLC secured permits for two horizontal wells -- one in Carroll County in Perry Township and another in Harrison County in North Township -- ODNR reports.
A third permit was issued to R.E. Gas Development LLC, a division of Rex Energy, for a new horizontal well in Carroll County, Washington Township.
