YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued three new horizontal well permits for producers drilling the Utica shale last week, all of them in the central to southern portion of the play, records show.
Chesapeake Exploration LLC secured permits for two horizontal wells -- one in Carroll County in Perry Township and another in Harrison County in North Township -- ODNR reports.
A third permit was issued to R.E. Gas Development LLC, a division of Rex Energy, for a new horizontal well in Carroll County, Washington Township.
No new permits were issued for wells in Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties, ODNR data shows.
Since 2010, ODNR has issued 1,077 horizontal well permits for oil and gas exploration in the Utica shale. Of those permits, 735 wells have been drilled and 310 are now producing, ODNR reports.
No new permits were issued issued last week in Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
