Youngstown/Mahoning United Way Reaches 86% of Goal
Monday, January 17, 2005YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way annual campaign has reached 86% of its goal and volunteers will continue to work to raise the additional funds needed to reach the$3.2 million goal in the three weeks remaining in the campaign, according to Tom Hollern, area president for National City Corp. and chairman of the 2004 campaign."We have raised $2,747,400 so far, and our volunteers are continuing to work to raise the additional $453,000 needed to reach our goal," he said.

Youngstown Arena Project Boosts Global's Earnings
Monday, January 17, 2005YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-- The Youngstown Convocation Center is already boosting the fortunes of one company -- the one managing its development. Global Entertainment Corp., the Phoenix entertainment and sports management company the city of Youngstown contracted with to develop the $41 million downtown arena, reported Jan. 14 it earned $158,468, or three cents per share, during the quarter ended Nov. 30, compared to loss of $109,728, or three cents per share, for the 2003 period.

Ohio's Business Taxpayers Offered Relief from Winter Storms
Monday, January 17, 2005COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Business taxpayers who file sales tax returns online but were unable to do so because of power outages will not have to pay late-filing penalties, according to state Tax Commissioner William W. Wilking. Most of those taxpayers had sales tax returns due on Dec. 23, 2004, the day the snow and ice storm hit many areas in Ohio, he said.If taxpayers couldn't file because the electricity was out, department agents will waive late-filing penalties and still allow discounts for timely filing, Wilking noted.
