Ohio's Business Taxpayers Offered Relief from Winter Storms
"COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Business taxpayers who file sales tax returns online but were unable to do so because of power outages will not have to pay late-filing penalties, according to state Tax Commissioner William W. Wilking. Most of those taxpayers had sales tax returns due on Dec. 23, 2004, the day the snow and ice storm hit many areas in Ohio, he said.If taxpayers couldn't file because the electricity was out, department agents will waive late-filing penalties and still allow discounts for timely filing, Wilking noted. Taxpayers still will be responsible for paying any interest due on late payments. Taxpayers should file their returns and taxes as soon as they can, he advised. The payments that are delayed are ones that normally would be made through the Ohio Business Gateway, the system developed by the State of Ohio to allow for the electronic filing and payment of several business taxes, including sales tax, Wilking pointed out.Questions on the late filing of sales tax returns can be answered via e-mail through the Ohio Department of Taxation Web site.Visit the Ohio Department of Taxation: www.tax.ohio.gov"
