"FirstEnergy Foundation Awards $100,000"
"AKRON, Ohio -- The FirstEnergy Foundation has awarded grants totaling $100,000 to organizations in honor of the late FirstEnergy chairman and chief executive officer, H. Peter Burg. "These grants provide a continuation of Pete's legacy for giving and his love of the community," said Anthony J. Alexander, FirstEnergy president and CEO. "The recipient organizations were particularly meaningful to Pete, and we're pleased to offer this support."Awards were given to the following organizations:Team NEO. Burg was involved in the formation of this regional economic development consortium and served as its first chairman. As a result of this grant, Team NEO will institute an H. Peter Burg Regionalism Award Program.Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The grant was made in support of John Kellenyi's successful completion of the U.S. Marine Corp Marathon, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team In Training event. Mr. Kellenyi, the Society's largest individual fundraiser, participated in the marathon in Burg's memory. Funds raised will be used to support a five-year cancer research project at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.Heart to Heart Communications. This grant will support the development of marketing and related materials for Heart to Heart Communications, founded by Burg's longtime friends, Father Norm Douglas and Larry Vuillemin.American Red Cross Summit County Chapter. As chairman of the Board of Trustees, Burg was instrumental in the fund-raising effort for the construction of their new headquarters building in Akron. The grant will support safety instructor training programs.Akron Public Schools. This grant will support the Akron Reads Program and enhance business partnerships. As a member of Gov. Bob Taft's OhioReads Business Leadership Council, Burg was instrumental in the formation of Akron Reads.The FirstEnergy Foundation is funded solely by FirstEnergy Corp. and provides support to nonprofit, tax-exempt health and human services agencies, educational organizations, cultural and arts programs and institutions and civic groups in areas served by FirstEnergy's seven electric operating companies and in areas where the company has facilities. FirstEnergy's seven electric utility operating companies comprise the nation's fifth largest electric system, based on 4.4 million customers served within a 36,100 square-mile area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
