Ohio Liquor Sales Reach $898M in 2013
Friday, January 24, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sales of spirituous liquors reached a record in 2013, totaling $898 million, an increase of 5.8% over 2012. The top-seller was Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey, with 351,125 gallons sold.

Lopsided Vote at Vallourec Surprises Union Activists
Thursday, January 23, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Christopher Gallagher parked his white SUV just outside the gates of Vallourec Star's multi stand mill Thursday morning, jumped out, and began collecting the "Vote No" signs he pounded into the frigid ground more than a week ago.
The placards -- which the shift maintenance employee paid for himself and placed around the perimeter of the plant -- urged fellow Vallourec workers to vote against joining the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America.

Thursday, January 23, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- By greater than a two-to-one margin, workers at Vallourec Star's pipe mills here have voted against being represented by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America.
The vote was 367 workers against joining the union, or 71%, 148, or 29%, in favor. The results were announced at 9:30 this morning.

U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, the Republican representing Ohio’s sprawling 6th congressional district, was labeled by a liberal group for “show[ing] the most loyalty to the Tea Party, voting with them 85% of the time.”
Port Authority Approves Grant Proposal, New Officers
Thursday, January 23, 2014VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The Western Reserve Port Authority’s board of directors voted Wednesday to apply for a $1 million grant to establish a revolving loan fund for remediation projects on industrial and commercial sites in Mahoning County and Trumbull counties with “high development potential.”
The board, which welcomed two new members at its meeting, elected one of them, Ron Klingle, as vice-chairman. James Floyd, who has served on the port authority for three years, was voted chairman. Patrick Pellin was reelected as secretary.
Regional Chamber Names 11 to Its Board of Directors

Peter Asimakopoulos, Youngstown market president for First National Bank of Pennsylvania, will preside as board chairman; he was re-elected to the post during a recent meeting of the board.
Sweeney Donates to Boys & Girls Club, Salvation Army
Thursday, January 23, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC wrote a check for $12,900 to The Boys & Girls Club of Youngstown and a second for $8,900 to the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign from Operation Santa Claus.
The presentation of the checks, held Wednesday at the dealership here, resulted from the Operation Santa Claus project Sweeney created to provide support for children and families in need. "We like to think we are engaged and giving back to the community whenever we can," said Alexa Sweeney Blackann.

FTC Approves Deal for CHS-HMA Merger
