By spring, the downtown convenience store, at 116 W. Federal St., will expand by adding a lounge in the rear of the building and a second entrance on West Commerce Street. It opened four years ago. “I’m concentrating more on the food,” he said Tuesday.

Youngstown Jewish Federation Names Lipkin Executive VP
Wednesday, January 07, 2015YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Area Jewish Federal has appointed Andrew Lipkin executive vice president to succeed Sam Kooperman who served the organization for 41 years, 29 of them as executive vice president.
Lipkin's appointment, announced Tuesday by Bruce Lev, president of the federation's board of directors, was effective Jan. 1. He is only the third person to be appointed executive vice president of the federation in its 80-year history.
Area Home Prices Rise 6.4% From November 2013
Wednesday, January 07, 2015IRVINE, Calif. -- Home prices in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman area in Ohio, including distressed sales, were up by 6.4% in November 2014 from a year earlier, CoreLogic reported Tuesday. Month over month, home prices, including distressed sales, were down 0.4% compared to October 2014, according to the financial data company.
Excluding distressed sales, year-over-year prices increased by 3.9% in November compared to November 2013. On a month-over-month basis, excluding distressed sales, the index indicates home prices decreased by 0.4% in November 2014 from the month before.
U.S. Attorney's Office Collects Record Amount in 2014
Wednesday, January 07, 2015CLEVELAND -- The United States Attorney's Office Northern Ohio district collected a record $356.7 million in the 2014 fiscal year, the office said in a press release. The district covers 40 counties, including Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
The money is collected from criminal and civil cases the office is “exclusively or substantially” involved in and distributed to crime victims, law enforcement agencies that participated in investigations, other federal agencies and the U.S. Treasury.

US Steel to Idle Lorain, Houston Tubular Mills
Tuesday, January 06, 2015LORAIN, Ohio -- United States Steel Corp. confirmed today that it will temporarily idle its Lorain Tubular Operations as well as its Tubular Processing plant in Houston.
In a letter to the president of the United Steelworkers union, Leo Gerard, the company said, “This action is a result of a decline in tubular market conditions, which is impacting demand for the plant’s products.
Layoffs will begin March 8, the company said, idling 614 workers here and 142 in Houston.
Machinists Launch Drive to Represent Exal Workers
Tuesday, January 06, 2015YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Calls from a "substantial" number of employees spurred the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers to file applications Monday with the National Labor Relations Board in a move that could result in workers voting to accept or reject union representation at Exal Corp.'s plant here, a labor official says.
"Employees contacted us and said they wanted to have a voice," said Dennis Wright, business representative and organizer for District Lodge 54 of the Machinists union. "They want a contract, a labor agreement."
Gasoline Prices Continue Slide in Region, Nationally

The average price of a gallon of gas dropped nearly 16 cents this week, the agency reported. Across northeastern Ohio, the average price per gallon this week is $1.961, down from $2.117 the week of Dec. 29. During the week of Jan. 7, 2014, the average price per gallon was $3.329
