Ohio Posts Record New-Business Filings in 2013
Wednesday, January 15, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio – With nearly 90,000 filings received by the office of secretary of state, 2013 marked another record year for new entities filing to do business in Ohio.
The 89,735 filings received surpass 2012's total of 88,068.
New business filings are classified as forms filed with the Ohio Secretary of State that declare the formation of a business entity -- for-profit, nonprofit and professional corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships, says Secretary of State Jon Husted.
ACH Mahoning Valley Completes Needs Assessment
Wednesday, January 15, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley recently completed a community health needs assessment, the data from which should help the hospital system set priorities and guide its efforts over the next three years.
Working with the Kent State University College of Public Health, the hospital reviewed a wide variety of epidemiologic data for Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties. Additional information was obtained from focus groups and interviews with community leaders and public-health experts.
Camp Ravenna Gets $5.2M for Sewer/Water Extension
Wednesday, January 15, 2014RAVENNA, Ohio -- The Camp Ravenna Joint Military Training Center here will receive $5.2 million to extend a sewer/water line at the facility. The money was secured as part of the fiscal 2014 government spending bill, which is expected to pass this week, lawmakers report..
The $5.2 million, which Brown and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan helped secure, extends the Ravenna water/sewer line. This infrastructure and utility funding coincides with the Ohio National Guard's plans to expand and develop the camp as a major training site.
Arms Museum 'Heavily Damaged' by Broken Pipe

Well Permit Activity Slows in Second Week of January
Tuesday, January 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection awarded just a single drilling permit last week to Hilcorp Energy Co. for a new vertical well in Mercer County, Pa., records show.
The permit, issued Jan. 9, gives Hilcorp the green light to drill a vertical well on the Drake property in Pymatuning Township.
Hilcorp is among the more active energy companies drilling in this portion of the Utica shale. In Pennsylvania, a vertical well permit is issued before a horizontal permit is approved.
CCPA Adopts Budget, Sells Land to Pennex Aluminum
Tuesday, January 14, 2014EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio -- The Columbiana County Port Authority adopted its 2014 budget of $4.1 million Monday night, approved the sale of 2.84 acres in Leetonia Trade Park to Pennex Aluminum Co. LLC and sending a letter to Gov. John Kasich urging that he reinstate the extension of U.S. Route 30 to ODOT’s list of important highway projects.
The board conducted its business with four members because county commissioners have yet to either reappoint Rob Johnson or appoint a successor.
VAM Seeks City Incentives for New Plant Location
Tuesday, January 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- City Council will consider legislation Wednesday that would enable VAM USA LLC to start work on an $81.5 million pipe threading and finishing operation that compliments Vallourec Star's new $1 billion pipe mill here.
Under a proposed enterprise zone agreement, first reported Monday by The Business Journal, VAM, an affiliate of Paris-based Vallourec Group, would acquire the vacant Genmak building at 1053 Ohio Works Drive and add another 70,000 square-feet to accommodate the new operation.
Wallace, Hripko Take New Posts at NAMII
Tuesday, January 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, or NAMII, has selected its deputy director of workforce and educational outreach, Darrell Wallace, as its new deputy director of advanced manufacturing enterprise, the organization announced Monday.
Mike Hripko, formerly director of research and economic development at Youngstown State University's STEM College, was named the new outreach director to fill Wallace's post.
December Sales of New Autos Up 20% in Valley
Tuesday, January 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Sales of new cars and trucks rose considerably during December, posting a 20% increase compared to the same month a year earlier, says the monthly report of the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio.
Sales of new vehicles were also 16.2% better throughout all of 2013 than in 2012, the data show.
New-vehicle dealers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties sold 1,928 cars and trucks during the month compared to 1,607 in December 2012.
Dealers also reported they sold 27,628 new vehicles in 2013 compared to 23,760 in 2012.
