YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection awarded just a single drilling permit last week to Hilcorp Energy Co. for a new vertical well in Mercer County, Pa., records show.
The permit, issued Jan. 9, gives Hilcorp the green light to drill a vertical well on the Drake property in Pymatuning Township.
Hilcorp is among the more active energy companies drilling in this portion of the Utica shale. In Pennsylvania, a vertical well permit is issued before a horizontal permit is approved.
The company also has well sites in Lawrence County, Pa., and in Mahoning and Columbiana counties in Ohio.
There were no new permits issued for nearby Lawrence County last week, records show.
Meantime, permits for new horizontal wells in eastern Ohio's Utica shale dried up last week, as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued the go-ahead for just a single well.
ODNR awarded Triad Hunter LLC Jan. 8 a permit to drill a Utica well at the Farley farm in Washington County, Aurelius Township, records show.
No other permits were issued across the Utica in Ohio during the week, records show.
