Restaurant Sales Expected to Rise this Year
Thursday, January 23, 2014WASHINGTON -- The restaurant industry, driven by an improving economy and elevated levels of pent-up demand, is projected to post its fifth consecutive year of real sales growth in 2014. However, consumers remain in a recession mindset, which continues to dampen overall growth, according to Bruce Grindy, chief economist for the National Restaurant Association.
This year, the restaurant industry is expected to register its fifth consecutive year of real sales growth, according to the NRA’s 2014 forecast.

Farmers Bank Establishes Office in Rocky River
Wednesday, January 22, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Farmers National Bank is expanding to Rocky River in suburban Cleveland with the hiring of two key associates, the company announced Wednesday.
Ted Grabowski is Farmers’ new vice president/private client relationship manager and David E. Simko has been hired as the bank’s vice president/commercial banking. Grabowski and Simko will work from the offices of National Associates Inc., 20325 Center Ridge Road in Rocky Rive. Farmers National Bank acquired NAI, a retirement planning consultancy, in June 2013.
YBI Partnership Gets $1.3M for NAMII Foundry Project
Wednesday, January 22, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A partnership led by the Youngstown Business Incubator will promote the adoption of additive manufacturing in the foundry industry, funded in part by the National Additive Manufacturing Institute.
In conjunction with Youngstown State University and other local and regional partners, YBI will receive $1.3 million in funding and in-kind support as part of the second project call for NAMII, also known as America Makes, said Barb Ewing, YBI’s chief operating officer.
Valley Housing Sales Increase 6.5% in 2013
Wednesday, January 22, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of houses sold in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in 2013 was up 6.5% from a year earlier. At the same time, the average sale price for the year was down from 2012 in two of the three counties, annual data from the Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors show.
Combined sales for the three counties in 2013 totaled 4,912 houses, up from the 4,613 units sold in 2012.
Physicians Unload about Health Insurance Problems
Wednesday, January 22, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Four physicians and the executive director of the Mahoning County Medical Society gave U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-6 Ohio, an earful Tuesday about the shortcomings of health insurance since the Affordable Care Act was passed.
They met with the congressman in City Hall.
The doctors were especially upset that some of their long-time patients had been belatedly informed that they could no longer participate in UnitedHealthcare’s Advantage program and thus the carrier would not reimburse the physicians for care provided.
F.N.B. Reports Net Income of $117.8M in 2013

Hagan Advocates 7.5% Tax on Shale Drillers

Hagan (D-Youngstown) pushed his colleagues Tuesday to consider a measure that would reflect competitive tax rates on gas and oil companies while returning the revenues to local communities. "The bill stands in stark contrast to the leading GOP proposal," Hagan says, "a measure that is widely thought to undervalue the state’s natural resources and use the revenue for a tax break that favors the most affluent Ohioans."
