Gaming Industry Adds $240B to U.S. Economy
Thursday, October 02, 2014LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. gaming industry contributes $240 billion to the U.S. economy, a new study has found. That's equivalent to the total state budgets of New York and Texas combined.
The industry supports more than 1.7 million jobs, which is more than double the total employment in Washington, D.C., and nearly $74 billion in income, according to the study released by the American Gaming Association conducted by Oxford Economics. The $38 billion in tax revenues to state and federal government are enough to pay more than 500,000 teachers' salaries.
Ohio Attorney General Warns of Computer Scam
Thursday, October 02, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohioans are the target of yet another scam, this time involving computers. Callers tell consumers their computers are infected with a virus and falsely claim they will fix the problem.
The warning from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine comes at the start of October, National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Columbiana Port Authority Gets Broadband Study Funds
Wednesday, October 01, 2014EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio -- The Columbiana County Port Authority this morning approved two resolutions during a special meeting that could potentially improve broadband wireless capability throughout the county and strengthen its chances to lure new business.
The Port Authority board approved the acceptance of a $49,500 Local Government Innovations Fund grant from the state of Ohio that would be used to conduct a broadband connectivity wireless study, reports Port Authority CEO Tracy Drake.
Restaurant Performance Index Shows August Gains
Wednesday, October 01, 2014WASHINGTON -- Driven by stronger same-store sales and customer traffic levels and a more optimistic outlook among restaurant operators, the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index posted a solid gain in August. The index stood at 101.9 in August, up 1% from July and its first gain in three months.
C's Waffles Adds Express Location in Boardman
Wednesday, October 01, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- C's Waffles has expanded with C Waffles Express, a new location at 7105 Lockwood Blvd., Boardman. The restaurant opened Sept. 22.
The new location specializes in quick meals for breakfast and lunch, and features both dine-in and takeout service, according to a company news release. The establishment joins locations in Boardman, Hubbard, Brookfield, Struthers and North Lima in Ohio; Hermitage and New Castle, Pa.; and Smyrna Beach, Fla. Its first location opened in 1992.
Hours are 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
ODNR Issues New Permits for Southern Utica
Wednesday, October 01, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 17 new horizontal permits for oil and gas exploration in the Utica/Point Pleasant shale formation during the week of Sept. 21, the agency reports.
All but one of the permits issued were located at sites in the southern tier of the play, where wells have generally yielded more lucrative production results.
Antero Resources Corp., based in Denver, received the most permits with eight last week, ODNR reported. Six of those permits are for wells in Monroe County and two were for wells in Noble County.
Hallrich Donates $5,594 to United Way's Success By 6
Wednesday, October 01, 2014POLAND, Ohio – Hallrich Inc., which operates more than 50 Pizza Hut restaurants throughout Ohio, donated 10% of its sales from personal pan pizzas in the Mahoning Valley to United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley on Tuesday. The fundraising drive, which ran from June to August, raised $5,594 for the United Way's Success By 6 program.
Area Foreclosures, Mortgage Delinquencies Decline in July
Wednesday, October 01, 2014IRVING, Calif. -- Foreclosure and mortgage delinquency rates in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman Ohio-Pa. metropolitan statistical area decreased for the month of July over the same period last year, according to the latest monthly data from provided by CoreLogic,
The rate of foreclosures for the area was 2.35% in July, down 1.17 percentage points from July 2013’s 3.52%. The MSA’s July foreclosure rate was higher than the national rate for the month, 1.66%. In Ohio, 1.63% of loans were in foreclosure in July, down 0.83% from 2.46% in July 2013.
Tickets Go on Sale Today for 2015 TEDxYoungstown

The event will be held in the Ford Theater located in Bliss Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University. The theme for the independently organized event, licensed by TED, is “Breaking Boundaries.” Single tickets for the day-long event, which include lunch and access to all activities, are priced at $75.
