ODNR Issues New Permits for Southern Utica
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 17 new horizontal permits for oil and gas exploration in the Utica/Point Pleasant shale formation during the week of Sept. 21, the agency reports.
All but one of the permits issued were located at sites in the southern tier of the play, where wells have generally yielded more lucrative production results.
Antero Resources Corp., based in Denver, received the most permits with eight last week, ODNR reported. Six of those permits are for wells in Monroe County and two were for wells in Noble County.
XTO Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil, was awarded three permits for wells in Belmont County and American Energy Utica LLC secured three permits for wells in Monroe County and one in Guernsey County.
ODNR issued a single permit to Gulfport Energy Corp. for a well in Belmont County, while Chesapeake Exploration LLC received a permit for a new well in Carroll County, considered the central section of the Utica.
Since 2010, ODNR has awarded 1,532 horizontal permits for wells in the Utica, the agency reports. Oil and gas companies have drilled 1,092 wells and of that number, 577 are in production.
There were no new permits issued for sites in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties last week, ODNR records show.
Utica permitting activity was also quiet in western Pennsylvania during the week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP reports there were no new drilling permits issued for either Lawrence County or Mercer County.
