Local Food Promotion Gets $300K Boost from USDA
Tuesday, September 30, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Programs to promote the purchase and use of local foods received nearly $300,000 in federal funds this week.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded Farmers Market Promotion grants to the Lake-to-River Food Cooperative in Youngstown for $99,350 and to the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership for $96,733. Additionally, the 30 Mile Meal Initiative received $100,000 from USDA from its Local Food Marketing Program.
NanoLogix Tech Included in Tuberculosis Report

Kent State to Break Ground for $47.8M Architecture Center

Private Services Conducted for Former Rep. Traficant
Tuesday, September 30, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Private services were held for James A. Traficant Jr., the former congressman and Mahoning County sheriff who died Saturday from injuries sustained in an accident last Tuesday at his daughter’s farm in Greenford.
According to the obituary, posted at the website of Rossi Bros. & Lellio Funeral Home, which handled the arrangements, there were no calling hours and the notice does not cite plans for any kind of public commemoration, though area various media outlets report a family spokeswoman say an event is being planned in the next 30 days. He was 73.
UCFC, Home Savings Name Ellen Tressel to Boards
Tuesday, September 30, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- United Community Financial Corp., holding company of The Home Savings Loan Company, announced Ellen J. Tressel as the newest member of both the UCFC and Home Savings board of directors. Her appointment is effective Oct. 1.
In the news release, issued Monday afternoon, UFCF and Home Savings cited Tressel’s long tradition of community involvement, including 14 years in the financial services industry and several years as an active board member for charitable organizations.
