Wright to be Honored by Shenango Chamber
Friday, October 17, 2014SHARON, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual dinner at 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at Avalon Golf & Country Club @ Buhl Park. Michael Wright, president and CEO of the Shenango Valley Urban League Inc., will be honored as 2014 Person of the Year.
The keynote speaker will be Karen Winner Sed of Winner International.
A cocktail hour with a cash bar begins at 5 p.m., the dinner at 6 p.m. and the awards program at 7 p.m.
Cost is $75 per person, and reserved tables of 10 are available.
Ground Broken for $2.5M Adult Services Center
Friday, October 17, 2014HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A $2.5 million center set to open in June on the LindenPointe campus here will enable an organization to enhance the services it now provides adults with disabilities, say its principals.
Whole Life Services Inc. broke ground Thursday on an 8,600-square-foot training center that will be used to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities improve their academic, technical, life and business skills, said CEO Cindy Vogan.
Sunrise Springs Water Co. Expands with Acquisition
Friday, October 17, 2014HOWLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- The decision by the owners of Howland Springs Water Co. to retire created an opportunity for Newbury-based Sunrise Springs Water Co. to enter the Mahoning Valley market.
George Lanesky, president of Sunrise Springs, founded the company in 1990 when he saw a need for bottled water in his area. “People in our area were having problems with serious iron and odors in their water,” he recalled. Sunrise Springs had been doing most of the bottling work for Howland Springs “so it made sense ... for us to take over that business,” he said.
ODNR Issues 14 Permits for Utica Wells
Friday, October 17, 2014COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 14 new horizontal permits for oil and gas exploration in eastern Ohio's Utica shale for the week ended Oct. 11, the agency reports.
All of the wells permitted are located in what is considered the central and southern tiers of the oil and gas play, first developed by energy companies in 2010.
PDC Energy, based in Bridgeport, W. Va., was awarded seven new permits for wells in Noble County, ODNR reported, while Denver-based Antero Resources secured three more in the county.
L. Calvin Jones Seeks Donations for Food Drive
Friday, October 17, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- L. Calvin Jones & Co. is accepting food donations from the public with a goal of collecting at least 150 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
The public is invited to drop off food donations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the insurance company’s office at 3744 Starr Centre Drive. The food drive continues through Oct. 31.

Ohio's Ranking Improves Nationally in Workers' Comp
Friday, October 17, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio is again being recognized nationally for the improvement in its workers' compensation rates. The Oregon Premium Rate Ranking Study, a biennial review of workers' compensation rates released last week, put Ohio 33rd lowest among the 50 states. As recently as 2008, Ohio ranked third-highest.
Food Production Business Program Oct. 31

The program is for those thinking about becoming involved in the production, processing, distribution or delivery of locally grown food.

Chesapeake Sells Marcellus, Utica Acres to Southwestern
Thursday, October 16, 2014HOUSTON -- Southwestern Energy Co. today announced that it has agreed to pay Chesapeake Energy Corp. $5.375 billion to acquire 413,000 net acres in West Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania. The acquisition covers oil and gas assets in the Upper Devonian, Marcellus and Utica shales. It includes 256 operated and producing Marcellus and Utica horizontal wells and an additional 179 non-operated or non-producing wells.
Things Remembered to Hire 600 Seasonal Workers
Thursday, October 16, 2014NORTH JACKSON, Ohio -- Recruitments for 600 seasonal workers at the Things Remembered Fulfillment Center here will be held at OhioMeansJobs Centers in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties over the next five weeks.
The personalized gift retailer plans to hire 400 workers in a variety of production positions such as engravers, embroidery machine operators and quality control and packing, and fill 200 another customer service positions at its distribution center center.
