Food Production Business Program Oct. 31
SALEM, Ohio -- "Making Connections to Grow Your Business" is the focus of a day-long program to be held Oct. 31 at the Kent State University campus here. The program is for those thinking about becoming involved in the production, processing, distribution or delivery of locally grown food.
It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and lunch and refreshments will be served. Cost is $25 per person to cover food and refreshments.
The Sustainability Opportunity Development Center and its partners -- the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, The Ohio Employee Ownership Center at Kent State University and the Small Business Development Center at the KSU Tuscarawas campus -- developed the program, designing it to help participants start or expand a business here related to growing food.
The presenters:
- Leslie Schaller of ACENet, a commercial kitchen incubator, will share her 20-plus years of experience of launching and operating kitchen incubators.
- Christie Welch and Tom Snyder, of the Ohio Cooperative Development Center, will offer their insights on farmers’ markets, food co-ops, and apprentice-farmer programs.
- Kristina Clark, of Westbrooks Cannery, tell how she started and expanded her business.
- Roy Messing, of the Ohio Employee Ownership Center, and Leslie Schaller will highlight employee-owned business that operate in local-foods industries.
A panel of professionals will offer help to those interested developing a plan for local food operations, including how to go about securing financing. Joe Belinsky of the Regional Small Business Development Center at Kent State, will review business plans and operational resources, and David NcCann, of Natural Capital Investment Fund, will address financing programs.
Representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be present.
