Credit Unions Making More Loans, Adding Members
Thursday, October 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Not only are credit unions in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys making more loans, predominantly auto financing, their members are building their savings accounts. Credit unions also report their credit quality is improving and that they’re adding new members, as they call their customers.
Los Gallos Closes Its Downtown Restaurant
Thursday, October 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The sign says “Now Open” but look in the windows of Los Gallos Mexican restaurant downtown and you see three pans of sauces sitting on a counter but no stove or other appliances --- and no tables for the rows of booth seats that remain in place.
The Mexican restaurant, which opened last November, closed this week without public notice. An employee who answered the phone Wednesday at the Boardman Los Gallos confirmed the downtown restaurant is closed. “We’re in the process,” he said.
Uptick in Natural Gas Production with Pipelines
Thursday, October 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Gas production in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania could reach record levels next year because more pipeline capacity is coming on line across the country, allowing more natural gas from the region to be extracted.
“Once November hits there should be an uptick,” because if the additional pipelines, said Sami Yahya, an energy analyst with Bentek LLC, a Denver-based energy market analytics company.

GM Employee Wins Millionth Cruze Made Here
Thursday, October 16, 2014LORDSTOWN, Ohio -- Six months after it rolled off the assembly line at General Motor Co.'s Lordstown Complex, the millionth Cruze will finally hit the streets of the Mahoning Valley.
Since the car was produced, the plant has been selling raffle tickets to all members of locals 1112 and 1714 of the United Auto Workers union as well as retirees of the 50-year-old manufacturing complex. On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, drew the name of Sharon Frey, a chassis employee at the factory, as the winner of the car.

Second Ebola Stricken Nurse Visited Akron Oct. 8-13
Wednesday, October 15, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio --The Ohio Department of Health today reported that Amber Joy Vinson, the second health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas diagnosed with Ebola, visited family in Akron from Oct. 8 through Oct. 13.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified ODH of the situation early today.

Shepherd of the Valley Hires Marketing Director

In her new position, Procopio will be responsible for coordinating marketing and sales efforts, working on special events and projects and community relations. Before joining Shepherd of the Valley, she served SouthernCare Hospice as its community relations director where she focused on management and training of its sales team, customer service and community education.
Region's Hotel Industry in Midst of Building Spree
Wednesday, October 15, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- You would be hard pressed to find a period when investment in new hotel construction was as robust as it is today across the Mahoning Valley.
At least five hotel projects and several more renovations that run in the tens of millions of dollars are on the books as the construction season moves into the cold-weather months.
Hotels are either planned or under construction in Liberty, Canfield, Salem and Boardman, while a recently finished complex in Niles hopes to draw in even more business to a thriving retail area.
