Alcoa Creates Building & Construction Systems Unit
Friday, July 09, 2004PITTSBURGH -- Alcoa has created a global building and construction systems unit that will combine the company's European business with its Kawneer North American operations. The new global business will be based in Geneva, Switzerland, and will be part of the Alcoa Europe group of companies headquartered there."This new business combines our capabilities from both sides of the Atlantic to put Alcoa in a position to serve customers and capture opportunities on an international scale," said David W. ISG to Start Second Blast Furnace at Weirton Works
Friday, July 09, 2004RICHFIELD, Ohio -- International Steel Group Inc. today announced plans to restart a second blast furnace at its ISG Weirton Inc. Subsidiary and recall 50 steelworkers back to work.The increase production at the Weirton, W.Va., facility comes in response to strong demand for coated steel products. ISG Weirton is expected to produce 2,200 additional tons of iron per day."The integration of Weirton Steel into the ISG family of businesses has occurred seamlessly and more rapidly than we had expected," said Rodney Mott, president and chief executive officer of International Steel Group.

Ohio Supreme Court Suspends Attorney Colucci
Friday, July 09, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- This morning the Ohio Supreme Court imposed an interim suspension on attorney Mark Colucci while it considers further disciplinary action. In issuing the interim suspension, the state Supreme Court said Colucci had "committed numerous violations of the code of professional responsibility and that he poses a substantial threat of serious harm to his clients and the public." This figure represents an increase of 82 companies and more than $40 billion since October, when the center first released its study of contracts awarded to U.S. companies for postwar work in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Taft Seeks Federal Aid for Ohio Farmers
Thursday, July 08, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Farmers in Mahoning and Columbiana counties could be eligible for federal assistance to help with damage suffered from storms this spring.Gov. Bob Taft has asked U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman to designate 52 Ohio counties as disaster areas due to agricultural losses caused by flooding and extreme weather since May. The designation, requested by Taft in a letter dated July 7, would make crop and livestock farmers in the 52 counties and contiguous counties eligible for disaster assistance programs.
MVEDC Gets Grant to Boost Rural Businesses
Thursday, July 08, 2004COLUMBUS -- The Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corp. will receive a $99,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development office. The local development agency, located in Liberty Township,was among 10 Ohio deveopment agencies awarded $1 million in grants earmarked by the USDA for assisting businesses in rural areas."Ohio continues to do well in ensuring its rural communities have access to these strategically supportive business funds," said Randy Hunt, USDA state director.
