Penguins to Parade at YSU's Summer Festival of the Arts
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- More than 12,000 Mahoning Valley residents are expected to flock to the campus of Youngstown State University this weekend for the sixth annual Summer Festival of the Arts. The festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, and is sponsored by YSU, the Arts Council of Youngstown and Mahoning County and the Wick Neighbors. It features food, musical performances, children activities and dozens of artists' booths. Admission and parking are free. "The Summer Festival of the Arts is a true celebration of the visual and performing arts," said Lori A. Factor, festival coordinator. Several new attractions highlight this year's event, Factor noted, including the Penguin Parade, a public arts project of 31 seven-foot sculptures that have been transformed into works of art by local artists. The penguins will be on display both days of the festival. The Smoky Hollow 5K Run and One-Mile Family Fun Walk is another new event, she said. Registration is 9 a.m. Saturday at Harrison Field in Smoky Hollow. Saturday night features Forte on the Fifty at Stambaugh Stadium starring the Commodores. This is the first year that a national act headlines the event, which costs $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. The Commodores are known for hits such as "Three Times a Lady" and "Brick House." A fireworks display by B.J. Alan Phantom Fireworks begins at 10:30 p.m. The heart of the festival, Factor said, is the artists' marketplace that showcases the work of 53 local, regional and national artists selling original, hand-crafted pieces such as jewelry, paintings, sketches, sculptures, toys and music.Dozens of children's activities, the young artists' expo, more than 60 musical, dance and theatrical performances, college open houses, a youth media film series at the McDonough Museum of Art and the Festival of Nations are just a few of the other activities, Factor said.A new vendor this year is Edy's Ice Cream. Samples of the well-known brand will be distributed, with a new flavor debuting at the Summer Festival of the Arts.Visit the Summer Festival of the Arts at www.ysu.edu/sfa."
