YSU Community Optimistic Despite Enrollment Drop
Wednesday, August 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Across the Youngstown State University campus, several individuals remain confident that YSU will rebound from its most recent drop in enrollment.
YSU reported this morning, the first day of the fall semester, that enrollment declined for the fourth consecutive year, by 6.5%. In June, the university said the loss from lower tuition revenue and decreased state funding over the past three years was $19.5 million. That number could reach $22 million this year, the same report said.
Economic Growth Gets Back on Track in Salem
Wednesday, August 20, 2014SALEM, Ohio -- More than 25 years after it was constructed, the Salem Industrial Park is nearly filled, packed with small companies carving their own niches in local and international markets.
Meanwhile, activity on the east and north sides of this city points to future growth in commercial development, helped along by new infrastructure and a menu of incentives programs intended to boost business attraction, officials say.
“A lot more is coming,” says Mayor John Berlin, referring to work ongoing on the east side of town where a new Holiday Inn Express is under construction.
YSU Enrollment Down 6.5% from 2013 Fall Semester
Wednesday, August 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Classes begin today at Youngstown State University with first-day enrollment down 6.5% from the fall 2013 semester.
YSU reported this morning that 12,337 students are registered for classes. By comparison, in the fall 2010 semester, 15,194 students enrolled in YSU. Enrollment numbers are not official until the 15th day of the semester.
34 LPNs to Lose Jobs at Trumbull Memorial Hospital
Wednesday, August 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Friday marks the last day of work at Trumbull Memorial Hospital for 34 licensed practical nurses whose jobs will be lost in what the hospital says is a “transition to a nurse staffing model that uses registered nurses and nursing assistants.”
The Service Employees International Union, which represents 250 workers at TMH, says it filed a grievance against the hospital for violating the contract. SEIU District 11 has also filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against ValleyCare of Ohio, which operates TMH.
VEC’s Ferry Honored by National Electrical Contractors
Wednesday, August 20, 2014GIRARD, Ohio -- Rex Ferry, owner and CEO of VEC Inc., was presented the National Electrical Contractors Association’s James Robert “Bob” Pritchard Electrical Industry Award at a recent recognition ceremony in Youngstown. The award recognizes an individual in District 2 who has advanced the electrical contracting industry in an extraordinary manner.
A delegation of officials from NECA headquarters in Washington, D.C., including CEO John Grau, presented the award. District 2 is composed of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
Business Paid $671B in State, Local Taxes in Fiscal 2013
Wednesday, August 20, 2014WASHINGTON -- American businesses paid $671 billion in state and local taxes in U.S. fiscal 2013, accounting for 44.9% of all state and local taxes, based on the Council on Srtate Taxation data analyzed by Ernst & Young LLP. State business taxes grew 4.7% compared to local tax growth of 3.7%, the third consecutive year of increases in both categories.

Pa. Table Games Revenue Increases 2% in July
Wednesday, August 20, 2014HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Revenue from table games play at Pennsylvania casinos was $61.1 million in July. This represents a 1.93% increase in revenue from play compared with July 2013.
There was a slight decrease in the combined overall gaming revenue at the 12 casinos this July compared to last year. Total revenue from slot machines and table games was $262,525,675 compared with $264,860,050 in July 2013, a difference of 0.88%.
Mandel Explains Tax Reform Bill to NFIB Youngstown
Tuesday, August 19, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- For Enertech Electrical Inc. in Lowellville, dealing with quarterly income taxes can be a time-consuming process, CEO Greg Haren laments. The company, which does business in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, has to send paperwork out to some 20 to 30 municipalities, he said.
“You have to know all the different rules and regulations. It’s very time-consuming for people to put that together,” Haren explained.
July Unemployment Up in Youngstown, Warren
Tuesday, August 19, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Unemployment in each of the Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities rose by nearly a full percentage point in July from the month before, the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services shows.
County and metropolitan area data for the region released this morning by the state agency also showed unemployment rates last month were up from June, although the unemployment rate was down from July 2013 for the local cities, counties and metros.
