34 LPNs to Lose Jobs at Trumbull Memorial Hospital
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Friday marks the last day of work at Trumbull Memorial Hospital for 34 licensed practical nurses whose jobs will be lost in what the hospital says is a “transition to a nurse staffing model that uses registered nurses and nursing assistants.”
The Service Employees International Union, which represents 250 workers at TMH, says it filed a grievance against the hospital for violating the contract. SEIU District 11 has also filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against ValleyCare of Ohio, which operates TMH.
“This move could drastically change the delivery of care provided to patients and is a direct violation of the collective bargaining agreement currently in pace until 2016,” the union said in a statement.
A statement from TMH affirms the hospital’s commitment “to providing our patients with quality health care … through effective and efficient operations.”
Discussions were held May 7 with the SEIU regarding “the nursing care plan in which registered nurses will be the primary provider of patient care at the bedside,” the hospital said.
Hospital officials began meeting Tuesday with LPNs and union representatives.
The union said earlier this week that 47 LPNs would be affected.
There is no indication yet if or when ValleyCare intends to implement a similar nursing care plan at its other hospitals in the region: Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland and Sharon Regional Hospital in Sharon, Pa.
