Hospice Volunteers Earn a ‘Paycheck of the Heart’
Monday, August 18, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Sometimes, Violet Parker doesn’t get there in time.
As a member of the volunteer vigil team at Hospice of the Valley, her duty is to be at the bedsides of patients in their final hours. In some cases, the call comes late at night – or, depending on your view, early in the morning – informing her she needs to go a patient’s house or nursing home. That drive can take as long as an hour.

Back-to-School Shoppers Cutting Back Expenditures
Monday, August 18, 2014BOISE, Idaho -- Mindful of saving money, more than half of back-to-school shoppers will not purchase computers this year, a survey by Crucial.com finds. Fully 57% do not plan to purchase laptops, desktops, tablets or mobile devices for school this year.
Crucial is a global brand of Micron Technology Inc.
The survey found that parents and college students are more concerned about being more prudent with their money and not incurring more debt.
Home Builders Confidence Grows in 55-Plus Market
Monday, August 18, 2014WASHINGTON -- Second-quarter builder confidence in the single-family 55-plus housing market hit 56, three points ahead of the same quarter in 2013.
This reading of 56 is the highest since the 55-Plus Housing Market Index began in 2008 and is the 11th consecutive quarter of year-over-year higher readings, says the National Association of Home Builders.
Ohio's Unemployment Rate Rises to 5.7% in July
Friday, August 15, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio’s unemployment rate rose by two-tenths of a percentage point in July from the month before, driven by job losses in sectors including manufacturing, professional and business services and educational and health services.
In July, the state’s unemployment rate was 5.7%, up from 5.5% in June but down from 7.5% in July 2013, according to this morning's report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
US Senators Urge Pause on Postal Center Closings
Friday, August 15, 2014WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown joined 49 of his colleagues in urging members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations to halt the planned closing and consolidations of several U.S. Postal Service main processing centers around the county, including one in Youngstown set to close next year.
Brown, D-Ohio, and 49 other senators sent a letter Thursday to the chairmen and ranking members of the Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government.
City MOU Seeks Cooperation from Downtown Businesses
Friday, August 15, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown officials will soon circulate a memorandum of understanding to downtown business owners outlining the city’s responsibilities for maintaining the downtown as well as what is expected of the businesses and property owners.
City officials have been working with downtown businesses to make sure they are aware of their rights and responsibilities, said the city’s law director, Martin Hume. Hume was among the city officials who worked on putting together the MOA, which was approved at Thursday’s meeting of the Board of control.

Friday, August 15, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued orders in January giving two Pennsylvania companies authority to dispose of brine at the Northstar Disposal Well #1, the well that officials say was responsible for a series of earthquakes that shook the Mahoning Valley in 2011 and early 2012.
Single-Family House Sales See Slight Lift in July
Friday, August 15, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A total of 468 houses were sold during July in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties last month, data provided by the Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors shows.
In Mahoning County, 224 single-family houses were sold in July, up from 212 a year earlier and from 209 in June. In Trumbull County, 172 units were sold last month, up modestly from 170 the month before and from 167 a year ago. In Columbiana County, single-family sales totaled 72, down slightly from July 2013’s 78 and June’s 79.
