Ohio to Announce Shale Production Results Today
Thursday, May 16, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a press event at 2 p.m. today in Columbus to announce long-awaited production results from ongoing oil and gas development in eastern Ohio's Utica shale.
The results will encompass oil and gas production for 2012, providing an analysis of the 87 producing wells, according to an ODNR release. Major oil and gas producers were required to submit their 2012 production numbers by the end of March. Ohio mandates that these companies deliver results of their producing wells annually.

In his brief remarks of acceptance, owner Sam Boak gave all the credit to his workforce. As Claudia Kovach, daughter of the woman for whom the award is named, was presenting the trophy, waiters were passing out dessert -- slices of cake with clear plastic forks stuck in the icing.

Avalon Holdings Posts $100,000 Net Loss
Thursday, May 16, 2013WARREN, Ohio -- Avalon Holdings Corp., based in Howland Township, reported a first-quarter net loss of $100,000, or four cents per share Wednesday.
In comparison, the company incurred a net loss of $400,000, or 10 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2012.
Net operating revenues increased to $14.7 million compared with $10.9 million in the first quarter of last year.
YSU Festival of Arts Seeks Volunteers

Ohio, Pa. on Top 10 List for Dog-Bite Claims
Thursday, May 16, 2013BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Dogs have good days and bad days. but for the 4.7 million victims of dog bites each year, a dog’s bad day can result in serious injury or even death. Ohio and Pennsylvania rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the number of dog bite insurance claims submitted to State Farm last year.
State Farm had 3,670 claims of dog bite submitted and paid more than $108 million as a result. This is a slight decrease compared to the number of dog bite claims in 2011 (3,750) and a slight decrease in the amount paid as a result of such claims in 2011 ($109 million).
Construction to Start Soon on $11M Hotel Project
Wednesday, May 15, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Work on an 85-room, $11 million Comfort Suites Hotel and separate banquet center that would accommodate up to 500 guests is set to begin soon in Liberty Township, officials confirm.
"I'd expect them to start work pretty quickly," said Liberty Township Administrator Patrick J. Ungaro. "This could be a great year for Liberty."
Ungaro said the new hotel complex would sit on nine acres near the Interstate 80 interchange on Belmont Avenue where a Ramada Inn once stood. That hotel, vacant nearly 10 years, was razed to make room for new development.
Larger Scholarships Help YSU Students Stay, Graduate
Wednesday, May 15, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University’s outgoing president expressed optimism Tuesday that increasing support for merit-based scholarships will help students stay at YSU as state support shifts to outcomes from the number admitted.
The YSU Foundation had announced that it would increase its support for the university’s scholarships for excellence to $6.8 million for the 2013-2014 academic year, an increase of $1.7 million. The scholarships are based on applicants’ academic performance.
