Two New Wells Slated for Poland Township Site
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has given the go-ahead for Hilcorp Energy Co. to drill two new horizontal wells at the Carbon Limestone site in Poland Township, Mahoning County, records show.
ODNR issued the permits May 9. Hilcorp has drilled and completed two wells at the site. They are targeting the Utica/Point Pleasant formation in eastern Ohio, a rock formation that is expected to hold vast reserves of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids. Hilcorp's joint venture with NiSource Midstream -- the 50-mile Hickory Bend pipeline project -- recently concluded construction of gathering lines from its first two Poland wells. Production was expected to begin sometime this month, said the COO of NiSource during a meeting April 30 with The Business Journal.
Since 2011, 19 Utica wells have been permitted in Mahoning County. In addition to the Hilcorp wells in Poland, three wells owned by CNX Gas, one in Ellsworth and two in Jackson townships, are drilled.
Another well in Milton Township was drilled in 2011, but is now listed as inactive.
Also last week, Brammer Engineering, a firm hired by BP America, was issued a permit for a new horizontal test well in Mecca Township, Trumbull County, ODNR reports.
The Mecca Township well, the Morrison 1H, is the seventh permitted in Trumbull County.
Halcon has three wells in various stages of development in Trumbull County, while BP is in the process of developing two.
CNX Gas still holds a permit to drill at the Wollam Farm in Vienna, but abandoned work at that site last year.
ODNR reports that a total of 22 new horizontal well permits were issued for the Utica formation between May 5 and May 11.
Thirteen permits were secured by Chesapeake Energy Corp., the most prolific driller in the Utica shale. Five of those permits were for wells in Carroll County, while eight new permits were issued for wells in Harrison County.
Hess Ohio Resources received a single permit to drill at a site in Jefferson County, while CNX Gas secured five permits for wells in Noble County.
As of May 11, 660 Utica wells are permitted, 326 of them are drilled, and 97 are listed as producing.
There were no new permits issued during the week for Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
